Merle Price Faculty Award For Excellence

Purpose and Intent of Award
Merle Price provided more than 40 years of service to UW-Stout and had a significant impact upon countless students. As a faculty member and Dean of Men, Merle Price exemplified a deep commitment to the welfare of students. In his name, the McCord Family Trusts are committed to recognizing outstanding tenure-track and tenured faculty. It is the clear intent of this recognition to attract and retain talented faculty. The recognition criteria focuses on (1) a strong record of teaching and learning innovation, and/or (2) research contributing to the mission of the university including research involving students. This annual award, up to $3,000, is intended for a tenure-track faculty member who has not yet received tenure and/or a tenured faculty member with a strong record of mentoring non-tenured faculty in the area of teaching and/or research. At the discretion of the award committee, this award may be divided between two faculty members. Award dollars are to be used to enhance professional development, research opportunities and/or classroom endeavors. Funds are to be spent in accordance with university guidelines and policies.

—Funds must be used within one calendar year of award

Criteria
The award committee will seek evidence of excellence in professional performance of a tenure-track or tenured faculty member. The committee will consider a tenure-track or tenured faculty member with at least two years of experience at UW-Stout and will not make the award to the same individual more than once every five years. Evidence of excellence must focus on the present and/or previous academic year. Evidence of excellence should include, but is not limited to:
—A strong commitment to teaching and learning. This commitment might be demonstrated through activities meant to advance the quality and practice of teaching and learning in the classroom
—Contributions to instructional program development and innovation
—Indicators of significant impact on students’ intellectual development, for example, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and/or global and multicultural understanding
—Meaningful, practical research contributing to the mission of the university. Inclusion of students in the research and writing of results is considered a desirable element
—Receive the award at Fall Opening Day
Documentation Required
—Two-page, condensed curriculum vitae
—Two letters of support from current and/or past students
—One letter of support from a colleague qualified to comment on the candidate’s teaching and/or research excellence
—Letter of endorsement from department chair or dean
—Narrative, of up to three pages, providing evidence of the excellence of the candidate’s teaching and/or research (may include a summary of student evaluations for each course taught over the past two years; a list of awards for teaching; invitations to speak at teaching improvement meetings; publications; presentations and other relevant material). Accomplishments should have a connection to promoting the university’s mission
