Protocol for Conducting Research Involving Human Subjects at UW-Stout

  1. Training (effective August 15, 2001, per former Provost, Dr. Robert Sedlak's memo to all faculty and staff via e-mail). All faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students must complete UW-Stout’s web-based Human Subjects Training, http://www.uwstout.edu/rs/hstraining/index.htm, before submitting the Protection of Human Subjects in Research Form to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for review. All research advisors must complete the training prior to signing the Protection of Human Subjects in Research Form for students.
  2. Submit Protection of Human Subjects in Research Form. Complete the Protection of Human Subjects in Research Form online, http://www.uwstout.edu/rs/humnsubjform.doc, and print. Handwritten forms will not be accepted. Send or take the completed form, with required signatures and required materials attached, to Research Services, 152 Voc. Rehab. Bldg. Keep a copy of what you submit for your records. Research Services will review the form for completeness when it is received.
  3. Review. During the review by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) member, a determination is made whether a full board review or an expedited review is most appropriate. Typically, expedited review will be completed within ten working days. If a full board review is required, it will be placed on the agenda for the next monthly IRB meeting.
  4. Completion of Review. Upon completion of the review, whether expedited or full board, the investigator(s) will be notified of the outcome electronically. The student’s research advisor (who signed the Protection of Human Subjects in Research Form) will also be notified of the review outcome.
  5. Upon notification of approval from the IRB, research can then begin.
