Purpose

The purpose of the UW-Stout Student Research Fund (SRF) is to provide undergraduate and graduate students with funds to support research. Research is defined as a systematic investigation designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge. This includes the creative pursuits characteristic of the arts and humanities. It is expected that this research will be conducted by the student or groups of students, with guidance provided by a member of the faculty/academic staff.

The Student Research Fund is supported by the Student Access to Learning Fee. The intent is to support strong student research proposals and grow the student research enterprise at UW-Stout. Interdisciplinary research (research between/across departments) is encouraged. SRF award recipients are requested to participate in UW-Stout's Research Day and to submit their research for publication in the University of Wisconsin-Stout Journal of Student Research. Recipients of the large research projects (more than $500) are required to submit their research for publication in the University of Wisconsin-Stout Journal of Student Research.

Eligibility

All students are eligible to apply to the Student Research Fund. All applications must be signed and approved by the faculty/academic staff providing guidance on the research project.

General Information

A single paper copy of the grant proposal request should be prepared by the student(s) and signed by the student(s) and faculty/academic staff sponsor prior to being submitted to the Research Services, 152 Vocational Rehabilitation Building. In addition to the signed, paper copy, an electronic copy of the grant proposal request, as a Word document, must be sent via email to rssubmissions@uwstout.edu. The subject line of the email must read: Student Research Grant Application.

You can submit a proposal at any time during the year. Most projects are completed in one semester or one year. The proposals will be reviewed on a monthly basis. However, it is recommended that you submit your proposal as far in advance as possible. The university cannot reimburse you for expenses you incur before the grant award. Notification of the award or denial will be sent via email by the end of the month in which the application is reviewed.

Your proposal should be written for readers who may have no direct professional knowledge of your academic subject, that is, it should be self-explanatory for an intelligent reader outside your field of study. In addition, your proposal should be a complete document that can stand alone. Proposals that are incomplete, do not follow the guidelines, or are not submitted in the proper format will be returned without review.

There are three types of funded projects:

  1. Large Research Project proposals (up to $2,000.00)
  2. Small Research Project proposals (up to $500.00)
  3. Dissemination of Research Project Proposals (up to $500.00)

Awards for a Small Research project will be up to $500 (between 16 and 25 proposals funded per year). These are intended to fund smaller scale projects or dissemination of research findings. Larger Research projects may be funded up to $2,000 (up to five funded per year). Approximately $18,000 has been allocated per year (July 1 through June 30) for this fund.

Other sources of direct financial support for the research project (departmental support, a faculty mentor's grant support, personal out-of-pocket contributions, etc.) should be identified in the grant request. Note that identifying other sources of support, while not required, is viewed positively.

When writing your grant request,

Don't be afraid to ask your faculty mentor for help in preparing this application. The proposal must be reviewed and approved for submission by a faculty/staff member.

Students receiving a grant award will be required to submit a final report to Research Services at the end of the grant period. The final report should address how the objectives were met and how the funds were expended.
