Traditional Professional Development Grants

Purpose

The purpose of the UW-Stout Traditional Professional Development Grant program is to provide opportunities for updating and expanding knowledge related to faculty or academic staff fields of study. The program has the following main objectives:

Foster Professional Expertise. The program should provide an opportunity for faculty and academic staff to enhance their effectiveness in meeting changing needs and roles in higher education.

Promote Program Quality. Professional development opportunities should contribute to enhancing the quality of the institution during a period of rapidly changing educational and technological innovations.

Enhance Institutional Effectiveness. A professional development program, including post-tenure development activities, should specifically enhance and refine those abilities most directly related to the mission and goals of UW-Stout.

Individuals or groups may apply. Group proposals must define/demonstrate the merit of multiple participants.

Funding awards will be up to $3,000; however, higher amounts will be considered. Requests for personnel dollars will be considered but are not a priority.

In the case of comparably ranked proposals, preference may be given to the proposer who has not received recent funding.

Proposal Format

The following sections must be included in the proposal. Number all pages consecutively, beginning with the narrative section. All proposals must be in font size 12.

Section 1: Cover Page (1 Page)

1) Project Title
2) Name(s) of Applicant(s)--one person should be designated as principal contact
3) Department/Unit
4) Campus address/telephone number/e-mail address
5) Project beginning and ending dates
6) Funds requested
7) List all of the professional development categories that apply:

a) Tenured Faculty (see 3a below)
b) Tenure-track Faculty
c) Academic Staff
d) Ethnic Minority Initiatives

8) Abstract (1-2 paragraphs summarizing the project; may be used for publicity purposes)

Section 2: Narrative (Pages 1-2)

1) State the project purpose and need.

2) State objectives and corresponding activities designed to meet the objectives.

3) Describe how the activities of the proposed project will contribute to the main objectives of the Professional Development Program: 1) Foster Professional Expertise; 2) Promote Program Quality; or 3) Enhance Institutional Effectiveness.

3a) For Tenured Applicants Only: Tenured applicants should reference their approved post-tenure plan, indicating how this requested professional development activity is aligned with their plan. Evidence must be provided on how the project will benefit the proposer's approved post-tenure review plan, department, college, and the university.

4) Evaluation--describe how the success of the objectives will be measured.

5) Dissemination--describe how the results of the project will be disseminated on campus (see the Requirements section of the guidelines).

Section 3: Budget (Page 3)

Attach a budget, with detailed line items and a budget narrative, including rationale for expenditures. (There are no indirect costs.) Funding is not provided for doctoral program tuition.

Review Criteria

Proposals are evaluated based on the following criteria: Ranked on a 1 to 5 scale (1=low; 5=high)

1) The project purpose and need is clearly explained.
2) Stated objectives will contribute to personal professional development.
3) The planned activities will allow the proposer to meet the objectives, including post-tenure review (if applicable).
4) Evidence is provided on how the project will benefit the proposer's approved post-tenure review plan (if applicable), department, college, and the university.
5) The proposal describes the standard used to determine the extent to which the objectives were met.
6) The project budget, budget narrative, and rationale are reasonable/appropriate to reach goals.
7) The planned dissemination is appropriate to the project.

Regular Cycle Review

All proposals are reviewed by Research Services and then routed for standard university signatures. The Professional Development Grant Review Committee, made up of five appointees each from the Faculty Senate and Academic Staff Senate, will review the applications. Recommendations for funding are then forwarded to the Provost for a final decision. Research Services then notifies the applicants.

Requirements for Accepting a Professional Development Grant Award:

1) Dissemination regarding the outcomes of the grant activities to the greater campus community is required. Methods of dissemination may include, but are not limited to:
a) Presentation at the Teaching and Learning Center's Seminars (Contact: Dan Riordan riordand@uwstout.edu )
b) Presentation during professional development week at the beginning of a semester
c) Hosting a seminar, colloquium or "brown bag" discussion
d) Presentation to a class or professional student organization
e) Poster session or show case display
f) Web page or e-mail disbursement
g) Continuing education offering

2) A final report must be submitted to Research Services summarizing all activities and outcomes of the project including documentation of the means of dissemination to the greater campus community.

Research Services is available for consultation regarding the means of dissemination.

Funding for this program comes from funds designated for faculty/staff development awarded by UW System and matched by the Provost's Office.
