Class Attendance Policies

Class Attendance
This will apply to all students enrolled at UW-Stout.
  1. Regular attendance is the responsibility of each student, and it is assumed that all students will attend the classes for which they are registered.

  2. The attendance policy of each instructor is to be submitted in writing to each student in each class. It may be discussed with or explained to the students. While attendance is likely to affect the student's achievements, the instructor of the class is urged not to use attendance as a major percentage in the calculation of the student's mark for that class.

  3. It is the student's responsibility to notify instructors of any situation that causes the student to miss class. Should the student be unable to reach an instructor, a message may be left with the department secretary.

  4. When a student is gone for one week or longer because of lengthy illness or a family situation, notification for student absences will be issued by the Dean of Students Office, 232-1181. This notification does not change attendance policies put in effect by the instructor and is a courtesy memo only, letting the instructor know the whereabouts of the student.

  5. For school-sanctioned events such as field trips, athletic contests and similar events, the coordinator of the event should send a list of the people attending the activity to the Dean of Students Office, and it will be kept on record. However, a notice will not be sent to instructors. If there are questions, instructors may contact Dean of Students Office, 232-1181.

First Day Attendance Policy
Students who do not attend the first class meeting of a course, or who do not notify the instructor or department chair that they will be absent for special reasons, may, at the instructor's option, be dropped from that course if, and only if, other students are waiting to enroll at that time.

Please note, however, that many instructors do not use this option. Do not assume that a course will be dropped automatically if you do not attend.

Working Through Labor Day
Students who are required as a condition of summer employment to work after classes start, up to and including Labor Day, have the privilege of making up the class work and assignments missed, providing the following conditions are met:

  1. Employers must submit a letter to the Registration and Records Office by August 15, on business letterhead, stating that the student will be employed through Labor Day.

  2. The student is responsible for arranging all make-up work with the instructor upon return. The policy does not imply that the student will be excused from any class work or assignments.

  3. The Registration and Records Office will provide the faculty with a list of the students who will return after Labor Day. The list will be provided to the faculty by the start of classes.

  4. Students on this list who have registered will be guaranteed their place in class through the first class meeting after Labor Day.
Note: This policy does not apply to individuals who are student teaching first quarter. Students enrolled in first quarter classes should seriously consider the consequences of working through Labor Day and their ability to make up work in those classes.

Religious Observances

  1. A student shall be permitted to make up an examination or other academic requirement at another time or by an alternative method, without any prejudicial effect, where:

    • There is a scheduling conflict between the student's sincerely held religious beliefs and taking the examination or meeting the academic requirement; and

    • The student has notified the instructor, within the first three weeks of the beginning of classes (within the first week of summer session and short courses), of the specific days or dates on which he or she will request relief from an examination or academic requirement.

  2. Instructors may schedule a make-up examination or course requirement before or after the regularly scheduled examination or other academic requirement.

  3. Instructors shall accept, at face value, the sincerity of students' religious beliefs.

  4. Student notification of instructors and requests for relief under par. 1 shall be kept confidential.

  5. Complaints of failure to provide reasonable accommodation of a student's sincerely held religious beliefs as required by this rule may be filed under institutional complaint and grievance procedures adopted pursuant to Chapter UWS 6 and Chapter UWS 13.

Examination or other academic requirement is defined as any course requirement established by an instructor which will be considered in awarding the student's grade in the course.

Questions should be directed to the Office of the Provost/Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs at 232-2421 or the Dean of Students Office at 232-1181.
