Bylaws of the Ethnic Studies Curriculum Advisory Committee

March 2003

  1. Purposes
    1. The purposes of the committee will be to review UW System standards, to develop and recommend UW-Stout policy and standards regarding the ethnic studies (ES) requirement to the Curriculum and Instruction Committee (CIC), and to recommend approval or disapproval of courses to be included in the list of ES courses.
    2. The committee will be accountable to the CIC.

    Membership

    1. The committee will consist of members as follows:
      1. One faculty member from each college/school elected by the respective college/school. The Faculty Senate will conduct elections.
      2. The Curriculum and Instruction Committee will appoint three additional faculty members: one who is the primary instructor of an "A" course, one of a "B" course, and one of a "C" course.
      3. The Academic Staff Senate will appoint or elect one academic staff member who teaches an "A," "B," or a "C" course.
      4. One student member elected by the Stout Student Association.
      5. One non-voting, ex-officio member appointed by the Provost's Office.
    2. Faculty and staff members (except for the student member) are elected to three-year terms with approximately a third of the committee being selected each year.1
    3. Duties of officers
      1. Each year at its organizational meeting the committee will elect a chair and a vice chair from the members on the committee.
      2. The terms of office will be one year in length with the possibility of re-election.
      3. The general duties of the officers are outlined in Robert's Rules of Order.

    Responsibilities of the Committee

    1. Development of ethnic studies standards
      1. The committee leads the university in developing, reviewing, and maintaining a common ethnic studies standard for undergraduate programs in the university.
      2. The committee submits for review by the CIC any proposals for changes in the ethnic studies requirement, including any changes in category definitions and credit distribution. The CIC will forward recommendations for approval to the Faculty Senate along with proposals for revision of ethnic studies.
      3. The committee makes recommendations to CIC concerning ES courses submitted for approval.
      4. The committee monitors and advises the CIC on UW System-level developments related to ethnic studies.
    2. Assessment and Review of Ethnic Studies
      1. The committee coordinates ongoing assessment of ethnic studies.
      2. The committee coordinates and assembles reports related to periodic review of ethnic studies by the Planning and Review Committee.
    3. Committee's role in education and advisement
      1. The committee will develop a schedule of tasks for the year.
      2. The committee advocates for ethnic studies as a vital component of education provided at UW-Stout.
      3. The committee serves as an advisory group to academic program committees regarding the ethnic studies component of degrees.
      4. The committee provides academic advisement information to faculty and students regarding ethnic studies.

1 For the initial year of the committee (2003-2004), twenty-five percent of the faculty elected by Faculty Senate will serve a one-year term, fifty percent will serve a two-year term, and the remainder will serve a full, three-year term. Initial CIC faculty appointments will be one one-year term, one two-year term, and one three-year term. The initial Academic Staff Senate appointment will be for a three-year term. Subsequent elections and appointments will be for three-year terms.
