Is the University Honors Program for me?
The University Honors Program (UHP) is for students who want to expand their education and get more out of their college experience than just a degree. The UHP is an enhancement to your Stout education; it is not about more faster, but rather, in depth discussion with your peers. This is definitely not like AP classes in high school. The people you will meet will be from across every major on campus. Read what other students have to say about the UHP.
What is the core curriculum?
The curriculum consists of four honors seminars, three of which qualify for general education credits. You are also required to complete four contract courses during your time at Stout. Twice a year, colloquia are held which usually require some reading.
What is a seminar?
There are honors seminars in literature, human development, technology and sociology. The seminars are small classes organized around fundamental questions. Rather than "cover material" of a subject, honors seminars use primary source and allow you to interpret and discuss the issues raised. UHP alumni recall these classes as their favorites.
What is an honors contract?
Honors contracts are projects students do with a professor. Students propose a "contract" in which they explore a topic of interest. Typically contacts start in the second year, and four are completed before graduation. Students are able to explore areas in which they have an interest with professors with similar interests.
Why would anyone want to do this?
Many students find the thought of discussing and exploring issues interesting. If you are a curious person this may be something you enjoy. Read what others say about the program.
How hard is it to quit if I crash and burn?
It is easy! We are here to help. If you are having trouble completing projects or just find too much on your plate, let us know!
Won't participating in the UHP brand me as an
"honors nerd" and ruin my social life at Stout?
This would be a reason to visit! The UHP may be the group on campus with the most diversity. Students vary widely and come from all majors. Come and see for yourself! The one thread commonly observed would be that they are students who are curious and like to consider the nuances of various topics. Read what others say about the program.
