Program Overview

UW-Stout's P.S.M. degree in Conservation Biology provides students with high‐quality training in evaluating, understanding and providing solutions to society's conservation challenges. The program teaches relevant skills and provides expertise to meet STEM workforce needs, while preparing graduates for professional careers. This program combines flexible online coursework and a diverse research focus to address the human impact on threatened and ecosystems around the world.

Our program is nationally recognized and is the only one of its kind in the region. We aim to train our students to understand and become experts in:

  • Native Species and Habitats

  • Environmental Laws and Regulations
  • Natural Resource Management

Our graduates work as professionals in conservation biology, environmental science, molecular biology, aquatic and marine science for public and private business, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. This unique 18-month distance-learning program prepares students to:

  • Research and critically interpret scientific literature to formulate hypotheses
  • Develop scientific foundational knowledge of current issues and problems
  • Apply contemporary analytical and experimental design techniques to environmental conversation
  • Analyze and predict responses of biological communities to past and future disturbances
  • Assess conservation strategies to help protect biodiversity
  • Organize and work with stakeholders to address environmental concerns





Entrance Requirements

Admission requirements for the program include:

  • a bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science or a science-related field from an accredited institution;
  • a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Those with a non-science related degree may be admitted if one of the three following conditions are met:  Completion of minimum competency course(s) with a grade of B or better, evidence of equivalent courses, or evidence of professional knowledge in this area.
