After receiving my undergraduate degree at UW-Stout, I started searching for a school that offered a graduate program that would allow me to work full-time while going to school. Stout’s new graduate program in Manufacturing Engineering fit well with its focus on online education. In addition to online options, a number of the core management courses could be taken at night on campus with students in other graduate programs.

The online format worked well for my schedule, allowing me to complete my schoolwork at night and during the weekends. The professors all had substantial industry experience and understood the demands of a full-time job. I enjoyed the online discussions with the other students in the program. They brought a large range of experiences from different industries and countries. I’d highly recommend UW-Stout’s online program for working professionals who are looking to improve themselves. UW-Stout offers an affordable and a high-quality option for a graduate degree.

What I liked about my studies is that my expectations were greatly exceeded. Going into the program and knowing that the courses were offered online, I was concerned as to the amount of communication that I would be able to have with the instructors with any questions that I might have. I quickly found that there was not a communication gap! All of my instructors quickly replied to all questions. Even though I wasn't in the classroom, it felt as though I was, based on the quick replies. Each instructor was well prepared with the curriculum and it was presented in a very understandable and organized fashion. I truly enjoyed being a student again and will miss the challenges that each course offered.

Thank you for offering a great degree in manufacturing engineering and I wish you continued success in growing the program! I will highly recommend this program to co-workers or anyone else who has an interest in pursuing a master's degree in manufacturing engineering.

In your opinion, what is the Stout Experience all about?

UW Stout was not just a school going about its business of teaching but was actively involved in educating people who would go to into the work force, with applicable knowledge. I have benefited greatly from my “polytechnic” education though it was online. I am proud of my education at UW Stout first and foremost for applying it every day. The professors did a great job in preparing the course materials. My class mates were also a great source of help. Working with teammates for online for group assignments were fun. Everyone was very respectful, diligent in getting work done and interested in Canadian perspective on issues. instructors were always accessible. UW Stout has been the best educational experience of my life. I am forever grateful to UW Stout.

Everyone was just so nice and really got things done quickly. The people who worked in administration were particularly helpful. All my inquiries were always addressed in a timely manner and I was always treated with respect.

How would you describe your professors?

The instructors at UW-Stout definitely understand industry and it shows in the way they prepared their assignments. I really liked the fact that assignments were all based on real-life industrial-type problems. The professors always challenged you to think about how the course material applies to your work.

In your opinion, what is the Stout experience all about?

True college experience goes well beyond the classroom! This is certainly true at Stout. Professors and staff I encountered at Stout truly cared about what happened to us. And the thing I remember most when I look back on my undergrad experience at Stout is that students and people were genuine when I interacted with them.

How have Stout people you’ve interacted with treated you and behaved with you?

People who work in the various ‘support’ offices around campus have a real knack for helping people in a friendly and professional manner that made me feel very much at ease. If I was unsure about anything, even where to find money to help pay for school, there was always someone just a phone call away. The people at Stout truly understand that we learn through every step in life, and the more ‘positive’ each moment is, the more we will take away from it.

How would you describe your professors?

From my experiences, I could point out professors who were extremely intelligent, some that had a significant amount of work experience in the field they were teaching, some that really knew how to teach what they knew, and some who were very personable and truly cared about their students and their students’ success. Professors at UW-Stout were well above average in all of these categories.

Was the program affordable for you?

I remember selling my plasma to help make ends meet during my first semester at Stout. Gradually though, with the help of some of those amazing professors that I mentioned above, I was able to get employment on campus. They also pointed me in the direction of some professional societies who offered scholarships. This eased the financial burden so that I could focus on my studies.

How will or has your graduate degree in manufacturing engineering affected your career?

All aspects of the program emphasis were placed on developing the critical thinking and problem solving skills I would need to be a great engineer. I think the program covered all of the bases I needed to perform to the high level desired when I entered the work-force. The combination of my experiences at Stout along with the strong work ethic and morals I learned growing up working on our family farm are the reason I have achieved the success I have to date!

How has the manufacturing engineering program done at meeting your expectations?
I really cannot say for certain what my expectations of the program were. I just knew I wanted more challenge and enjoyment out of my career than what I was getting at the time. Of course the nicer paycheck that I anticipated after completion of a degree was a great incentive, also!
