General Program Information

What specific classes are needed for the graduate degree?

The specific course are listed on your program plan sheet. If you do not have a copy of this, or you are not yet in the program, you can get a blank copy of the program plan online. Graduate Program Plan Sheet [PDF]

How many credits are required to complete the program?

The program consists of 30 graduate credits. Credits for certification will vary for each student because each student brings a different background of course work and experience for consideration. A review of credentials and a meeting with the program director will help to determine the courses necessary to complete the program and meet certification.

Is there a time limit for completion of my MS Degree?

Yes, students are only allowed to use courses as part of their program plan that have been completed within seven years of their graduation date.

Research

What research requirements are necessary to complete the program?

Students are required to complete TECED-739 Introduction to Research in Technology Education, EDUC-740 Research Foundations, and a research paper. The research paper can be either a six credit Plan A or a two credit Plan B.

Licensing Process

How do I get certified to teach technology education in Wisconsin or another state?

If you are certifiable, you must apply to the state agency responsible for certification. If you are not certifiable and are enrolled in the UW-Stout certification option of this graduate program, you may be able to teach on a permit. To get a permit, you must first find a school that is interested in hiring you because it is unable to hire a fully certified teacher. The district must request the permit from the certifying agency.

What specific classes are needed for the 220 license?

The specific course are listed on the 220 License program plan sheet. If you do not have a copy of this, or you are not yet in the program, you can get a blank copy of the program plan on-line. 220 License Program Plan Sheet [PDF]

Can I teach while working on my certification?

Yes. However, you must be admitted to the UW-Stout program, have a written plan for completion, and be making progress at the rate of at least 6 credits each year.

How do I get a provisional license?

First, get a school district to agree to hire you. Then, it is up to the district to request a permit from the State Department of Education or certification authority in the state in which you wish to teach. The district must indicate that they tried to employ a fully certified teacher, but were unable to find one to be available. Therefore, they are requesting a permit for you to teach. There is currently a national shortage of certified technology teachers and the state certification agency will know that this is the case.

How do I fulfill my student teaching requirements if I'm already teaching?

Of course you only need to be concerned about this if you are in the certification option of the program. When this is the case, student teaching can be fulfilled while teaching on a permit. As a result, you may complete this requirement while under contract. All of the student teaching requirements apply.

Course Offerings/Registration

Do I need to be on campus for classes?

You will need to be on campus to complete some of the program requirements. However, Stout does offer an increasing number of distance classes that can be taken off campus. The university also offers a rich summer offering of courses that meet during different periods of time, enabling students to build a schedule with good flexibility.

Does Stout offer off-campus/distance courses for the program?

Yes. UW-Stout offers several distance classes each semester of the academic year.

Transferring Classes/Credits

Can I take classes at a local university and transfer them into Stout's program?

Yes. You can transfer up to 10 of the 30 credits required by the program with permission of the program director. Courses must be approved to satisfy program requirements. If you are in the certification option of the program and are taking courses to meet certification, you are not limited to 10 credits. However, it is important to check with the program director to be sure courses taken for transfer will satisfy certification.

How do I find out what classes transfer?

Compare the courses being considered for transfer with those required by the program and then to be sure, ask the program director. This applies to both program and certification courses.

How many classes can I transfer into the program?

You can transfer up to 10 of the 30 credits required by the program. However, you are not limited to a specific number of certification credits you can transfer. Again, it is important that you check with the program director to be sure the courses you are considering for transfer will apply to the program or certification.

What is the procedure to transfer classes?

First check with the program director to be sure the courses will apply to the program. Then, request the university where you earned the credits to officially transfer the courses to the UW-Stout Graduate School. After transfer is completed, your program director must inform the Graduate School of how the courses are to be applied to your program.
