Applying for Graduate Study

US immigration regulations require that every international student studying in US has adequate financial resources to cover expenses. For this reason, all international students must provide documented evidence of adequate funds to meet expenses during first year of study and show that family or sponsors are able to send the necessary funds. Use the Declaration of Finances form [PDF] to document this. Other requirements are the submission of the International Student Application form [PDF], $45.00 (nonrefundable) check or money order in US dollars made payable to UW-Stout, sending two official transcripts of post-secondary work (translated into English) to Graduate School and arrangement for official TOEFL test scores to be mailed to the Graduate School. Visa information is provided by the Office of International Education -- International Student Services.

Special Assistance for International Students

The special needs of international students are met by the staff in the Office of International Education. Their services include confidential personal advice on immigration matters, financial problems, academic questions, social customs and personal concerns. Other services provided are new student orientation, living arrangements, host family information, info on traveling to Menomonie and problem solving. Some housing and living cost information is also found at the International Student Services site as well. You can choose to join the International Relations Club. This organization sponsors social events, trips to special events in neighboring states (films, museums and festivals).

Financial Assistance

International Student Tuition Reductions are available to qualified international students based on academic achievement, community service and availability of funding. The receipt of a scholarship reduces the amount of nonresident tuition owed to the university per semester. To receive these international student tuition reductions [PDF], students must apply and meet a variety of criteria to be eligible. International students apply for Stout Foundation scholarships ranging in amounts of $500 to $2000 in February of their first year; these scholarships are awarded each spring for the following academic year. US immigration laws restrict employment for international students to working on campus. Off-campus employment is not allowed for first year students but may be possible during subsequent years. In addition, international students work in the department as graduate assistants. Awards for the student's research project will be up to $500 (between 16 and 25 proposals funded per year). These are intended to fund smaller scale projects or dissemination of research findings. Larger Research projects may be funded up to $2,000 (up to five funded per year).
