Social Science

At UW-Stout, the goal of the Social Sciences Department is to prepare students to function in a diverse, demanding, and global society.  A minor in Women’s Studies is the ideal accompaniment for a student majoring in any of the Social Science fields.  Women’s roles in society have evolved greatly throughout history.  The changing role of women has greatly affected the study of social sciences throughout time.

The minor will broaden student’s knowledge of women and gender roles as well as cultural diversity.  With a growing concern for cultural understanding globally, the courses offered will provide students with the opportunity to pursue areas which they feel will affect their future careers directly and those which are of personal interest.

Course options for the minor will enable students to broaden their understanding of women and war, women in politics, and social class and ethnicity.  The resume of a Social Science student with a minor in Women’s Studies will stand out amongst the rest.

Courses offered which can be applied to Social Sciences contain material such as the historical, social, and cultural contributions of women, perpetuation of gender stereotypes, oppression, women in the workplace, and media’s impact on gender roles.
