- Transferring to UW-Stout
- Before coming to UW-Stout, transfer students must insure that they are accepted into the Business Administration program.
The program emphasizes written and oral communication and computer applications. You’ll get exposure to all facets of business — management, marketing, manufacturing, accounting, finance, economics, personnel management, international business, and law.
In addition to taking general business courses, you will explore one of UW-Stout’s technical areas to supplement the basic program. The technical component includes such areas as construction, packaging, graphics arts management, risk management, quality management, foods, tourism or apparel manufacturing and others.
UW-Stout’s educational approach will offer you work experience before graduation. Each Business Administration student participates in an on-campus practicum and an off-campus field experience, or co-op.
The business faculty know how to communicate and motivate. They have first-hand knowledge of the business world through work experience and/or consulting.
Preparing for UW-Stout
Preparation for college begins in high school. We recommend computer classes and courses in bookkeeping, science, advanced math, speech and advanced writing. Involvement in extra curricular activities is valuable. Any related work experience is a plus.
Starting Out
During your first two semesters, you enroll primarily in General Education courses. In addition, introductory courses help you refine career direction, and emphasis is placed on choosing a career field as soon as possible. With help from a faculty advisor, you will choose a career area and select technical components. Help with course and career choices is also available through the Advisement and Career Center, the University Counseling Center, and Career Services.
As You Progress
A strong general education foundation is enhanced by business courses in marketing, management, production operations, finance, personnel, accounting, law and international business. You then select upper-level courses in these same areas as they apply to your career goals.
In addition, comprehensive courses in areas such as international studies, information systems and quality management let you apply information from previous courses to a broader view of business. At the same time, you enroll in courses to fulfill the technical component. This requirement takes advantage of UW-Stout’s technical areas to supplement business courses. For example, if a student has an interest in food and beverage sales, an applicable technical area might be food and nutrition or packaging.
An on-campus practicum and an off-campus work experience are included in the program. The practicum provides an opportunity to apply course work to solve practical problems encountered in business and industry.
Student professional organizations provide an additional opportunity to learn outside the classroom setting. A university survey recorded 25 student organizations in which Business Administration students can get additional experience in their career areas.
Entry Positions
Industrial, consumer, service and government organizations seek qualified professionals with knowledge about all aspects of business enterprise. Earning a bachelor of science degree in Business Administration can lead to positions with local, national or international firms. Additionally, many government agencies at the local, state and national level employ business graduates. Entry level is determined by variables including electives taken, work experience, personal contacts, grade point average and economic cycles.
The employment rate of 2006–07 graduates was 94 percent, and rates have consistently been 95 percent or greater in the recent past. Entry salaries ranged from $18,000 to $70,000.
