What is Applied Science?

The Applied Science major is a cross-disciplinary degree that is concentrated in the natural sciences. You'll take coursework in biology, chemistry and physics. You'll also complete courses in marketing and economics. The two current concentrations in Applied Science are Technical Sales and Support, and Scientific Laboratory Management.

What type of career could I have if I complete this program?

Graduates will typically be employed as sales representatives for instrumentation and pharmaceutical companies or project managers for corporations involved in quality control, and research and development.

What background do I need to enroll in the Applied Science program?

In high school you should take all of the college prep biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics courses available to you.

What type of advisement will I receive?

As an incoming student you'll be advised by the program director when you register for your first semester of classes. After you begin, an assigned faculty member from the biology, chemistry or physics department will advise you until you reach second-semester sophomore status. From that point on, you'll be advised by the program director.

What makes this program distinctive from others I might find?

The Applied Science program is unique since it integrates the sciences with business and management. Graduates will have a solid foundation in the sciences because of our "hands-on" learning environment combined with an integrated capstone course. In addition you'll have an understanding of the business community. With UW-Stout's long-standing relationship with industry, you'll have exposure to various components of industry via the coop experience.

Is a co-op/internship required or important during my studies?

A co-op/internship is required to earn the Applied Science degree. You'll find that a co-op/ intern experience is also important as it helps you define your career path. This experience makes you more attractive to prospective employers as well.

Do I need to be on campus to complete this degree?

If you are a technical college graduate, and have worked in your field for two years, and want to pursue a four-year degree, the Applied Science program offers a degree completion option. Your associate degree credits will transfer to UW-Stout with the consent of the program director.

After completing the program core courses and necessary general education credits, you and the program director will design a series of capstone, science and technical courses. After completing the courses you will graduate with a B.S. in Applied Science with no concentration specified.
