Congratulations! By visiting our webpage, you are taking positive steps toward a brighter future. We've compiled some of our most Frequently Asked Questions so you can find out a little more about our program, to see if it's right for you.

Do I need to submit a portfolio of artwork to be admitted to the program?

Applicants pursuing Art—Graphic Design and Art—Interior Design must must submit a portfolio and essay to be reviewed by a committee of Art and Design department faculty, who will determine admission into the major. Learn more here.

Will I have the opportunity to participate in an internship or co-operative education experience during my college career?

Certainly! We encourage students to gain "real world" work experience and through the Career Services Office maintain relationships with many employers interested in hiring student designers and artists. Although encouraged, such an experience is not a specific degree requirement.

Are there art scholarships available to qualified students?

Scholarships are available through the Stout University Foundation for both new and continuing students --- some are especially for students in the art program.

Will I need my own computer?

No. There are several computer labs across campus with the appropriate computers and necessary software for students in the art program. Of course, it is advantageous to have one's own computer if it is powerful enough and equipped with the software needed for art and design applications.

Is it possible to graduate in four years (eight semesters)?

Yes. The program is designed to be completed in four years if a student carries an average of 16 credits per semester and successfully completes degree coursework in the proper sequence.

Will I be assigned an academic advisor?

In your first semester you will be assigned a faculty member from the department of Art and Design to help you with registration academic advisement. That faculty member will be your advisor as long as you are in the program.

If I am not exactly sure that I have chosen the right major/concentration for me, can I change at a later date?

Students may make a change of major/concentration request at anytime. Admission to the alternate program will be granted if they meet criteria specified by each program upon space availability. It is recommended, however, that students make programs within the first three semesters to avoid unnecessary accumulation of excess credits-to-degree and problems associated to programmatic sequencing.

What high school classes should I take to prepare for a career in art or design?

College preparatory classes are a must, and any art-related courses, such as drawing, painting, ceramics, photography and computer graphics, are recommended.

Will I have to take math to earn my art degree?

The curriculum has a general education component that requires that students complete six analytic reasoning credits. Students may take math or alternate courses that address symbolic logic to meet that requirement.

Must I be able to draw well to succeed in art and design?

Drawing is a very important skill for the artist and designer and is a valuable means of thinking and communicating. It is not necessary that a successful artist/designer master drawing, but it is indispensable nonetheless. The curriculum is designed to develop each student's drawing ability, regardless of their skill level and background upon entry.
