Paralegal Certificate Course© – $1,189

This course is designed for those who want to learn more about the American legal system, work in a law office as a paralegal, open a freelance paralegal business, litigate their own cases on a pro se basis, assist retained attorneys in litigating their own cases or prepare themselves to excel during their first year of law school.

Paralegal I: Provides the foundation for the study of paralegalism. This part of the course will provide a detailed understanding of the American legal system, legal terminology and ethics. Students will learn how to prepare pleadings, discovery, motions and briefs, as well as review the rules of evidence and civil procedure.

Paralegal II: Provides instruction on more advanced paralegal skills including legal research, writing and proper citation format. Students will learn how to prepare important legal documents relating to real property, corporations, partnerships, wills, trusts, bankruptcy and domestic relations. Formal and informal advocacy techniques and principles of appellate procedure will also be covered.

This course is completed in two consecutive seven-week sessions, both of which are included in the $1,189 tuition. Upon successful completion of Paralegal I and II, students will receive a Certificate of Completion from UW-Stout.

Advanced Paralegal Certificate Course$1,650

Prerequisite: The Paralegal Certificate Course©, the equivalent or at least one year of legal office experience

Picking up where the Paralegal Certificate Course© left off, students with be provided with more in-depth coverage of specific topics of law. Advanced topics include: Advanced Legal Research, Victim Advocacy. Constitutional Law and Civil Liberties, Criminal Law, Bankruptcy Law, Family Law, Estate Planning, Mediation and Other Forms of ADR, Business Law and Practices, Water Law, Immigration Law, Education Law, Criminal Procedure and Intellectual Property.

Each topic is completed in one seven-week online session, and students can take up to three topics per session. Upon successful completion of six Advanced topics, students will receive a Certificate of Completion from UW-Stout.

Legal Secretary Certificate Course$575

This course provides marketable job skills to those interested in a career change, and helps legal secretaries increase office efficiency and productivity. Topics of study include introduction to the theory of law, the legal process, nature of the practice of law, specific legal terminology and legal ethics. To build on law office management and technology skills, students will prepare legal correspondence, draft court documents, open client files, conduct conflict checks, track and enter task times, calculate dates, process calendar and docket entries and prepare billing statements.

This course is completed in one seven-week session. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from UW-Stout.

Legal Nurse Consultant Training Course$849

This program prepares medical professionals for a career as legal nurse consultants. Building on a medical education and possible clinical experience, this course provides the fundamental skills necessary to advise law firms, health care providers, insurance companies and governmental agencies regarding medical issues, as well as provide expert witness testimony in court. Topics of study include legal theory and terminology, fundamentals of legal writing, the litigation process and trial preparation.


This course is completed in one seven-week session. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from UW-Stout and a certificate of contact hours from The Center for Legal Studies.

Legal Investigation Certificate Course$575

Designed to teach legal investigation skills, students will be qualified to assist attorneys, paralegals, insurance companies, private businesses and government agencies in the process of civil and criminal investigation. Participants will also learn how to create a freelance investigation business. Topics of study include legal and ethical considerations for the investigator, sources of leads and information, surveillance, general interviewing and investigation techniques, accident reconstruction, forensic photography, fact analysis, document analysis and control and proper service of legal process.

This course is completed in one seven-week session. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from UW-Stout.

Alternative Dispute Resolution Certificate Course (Mediation)$575

This intensive course qualifies students to develop or participate in the conflict mediation processes. Students will review the growth and application of settlement options in the United States, focusing on both traditional and non-traditional dispute resolution options and taking the mystery out of settlement processes. Topics of study include techniques for mediation, the role of the mediator, settlement issues in the business sector, employment disputes and employer-employee relationships.

This course is completed in one seven-week session. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from UW-Stout.

Advanced Legal Research & Writing Certificate Course$729

Prerequisite: The Paralegal Certificate Course©, the equivalent or at least one year of legal office experience

This course teaches advanced and specialized uses of legal resources available in a law library, and elsewhere. Students will learn the conceptual differences between electronic and manual legal research, as well as the effective and efficient use of WESTLAW and other online legal research methods for saving time in legal research and legal writing. Other topics of study include the use of various types of legal authorities, writing a legal analysis and other types of legal writing, drafting a Memorandum of Law and briefing case options.

This course is completed in one seven-week session. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from UW-Stout.

Intellectual Property Law for Engineers Certificate Course$575

Engineers are particularly concerned with patent law, a constitutionally-based discipline to protect an invention and its creator from infringement and unfair competition. This in-depth course will deal with patent applications, research and prosecution, the law of infringement, and computer applications of software (protected by copyright) and hardware (protected by patents). Topics of study include understanding the various types of intellectual property (IP) rights; the relationship between innovation, IP and business development; appropriate content in a patent application; and understanding the basics of disclosure and confidentiality agreements.

This course is completed in one seven-week session. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from UW-Stout.

Victim Advocacy Certificate Course$575

This intensive program trains and qualifies students to work with state and county governments as advocates for crime victims, assisting them in progressing through the criminal justice system and toward successful recovery. Topics of study include effects of crime on victims; guidelines for responding to victims of crime and trauma; the roles of the crisis interventionist and victim advocate; effective listening skills for supporting victims; assisting those with dealing with the death of a loved one; and facts and myths regarding domestic violence, crimes against children and sexual assault.

This course is completed in one seven-week session. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from UW-Stout.
