Department Overview

The University of Wisconsin-Stout Police Department is a full service, 24 hr. agency. Our staff consists of a Chief of Police, two Sergeants, six Full-time officers, and five Part-time Police officers (designated LTE officers in state employment) and a full-time Police Services Associate. Police officers are armed and have full arrest powers. Patrol methods include bike patrol, marked patrol cars, and foot patrol.

Salary

Full-time entry-level Police Officers start at approximately $42,000 per year plus excellent benefits and a variety of additional overtime opportunities. A 12-month probationary period is required. This job title is included in the Law Enforcement Bargaining Unit of the Wisconsin State Employee's Union.

Job Duties

Engage in formalized problem solving and initiate crime prevention measures whenever possible. Write clear and concise reports based on daily police activity. Use a variety of patrol techniques and strategies to ensure the safety and security of all persons and property on the UW Campus. Provide basic first aid to victims as a first responder. Take proper enforcement action for traffic violations and laws relating to the UW Administrative Code and Wisconsin State Statutes. Must be able to effectively and safely operate an emergency vehicle and when appropriate, use force within the guidelines set forth by the State of Wisconsin and UW-Stout Police Department policy. QUALIFIED APPLICANTS WILL HAVE AN ASSOCIATE DEGREE OR A MINIMUM OF 60 CREDITS OF POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION FROM AN ACCREDITED COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY, OR TECHNICAL SCHOOL.

Special Requirements

Candidates must attend a Wisconsin Department of Justice approved "recruit" training school during the probationary period or already be certified by the Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) as a Wisconsin Peace Officer. Candidates must also have a valid Wisconsin driver's license be at least 21 years old at time of hire; with good character; good driving record; NO un-pardoned adult felony convictions; NO convictions for domestic violence; and "free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect performance" as a law enforcement officer.

This bulletin is available in most libraries, Wisconsin State office buildings, Job Service offices and at all University of Wisconsin campuses (libraries and personnel offices).  The Application Forms link at the bottom of this page will get you to a page to access the Special Application Materials. When Full-time recruitment occurs, the recruitment will be used to fill vacancies on the UW-Stout Campus. Applications will be accepted continuously until available positions are filled. An initial interview process will begin when there are positions open and an adequate number of qualified applicants. Applicants will be notified at that time and invited to take part in the interviewing process.
