Police and Parking Services
About our Department
MISSION STATEMENT
In partnership with students, staff, and visitors,
we serve and protect UW-Stout's diverse community.
The primary purpose of the University of Wisconsin-Stout Department of Police and Parking Services is to help maintain an environment conducive to the educational, professional, and personal growth of all members of the campus community. The campus can be considered a community within a community in terms of area and population. The main campus and residence halls consists of 56 buildings and 24 parking lots on 130 acres. Student enrollment is roughly 7,200 with nearly 3,000 students living on campus. UW-Stout employs over 1,000 employees serving the campus community.
DEPARTMENT STAFF
The department is staffed by the Director of Police and Parking Services, Police Sergeant, Parking Coordinator, six full-time Police Officers, four LTE Police Officers, two Program Assistants. In addition, students are employed as Parking Enforcement Officers, office assistants and maintenance workers.
PARKING SERVICES
UW-Stout Parking Services is entirely self-supporting. All operating and capital expenses of Parking Services must be fully funded by user fees. Currently, there are over 2,500 parking spaces. Nearly 1,700 of these parking spaces are dedicated to student resident parking. Staff parking accounted for over one-quarter of the total available parking spaces. Commuter, visitor and metered, disabled, motorcycle, and state vehicle parking spaces are also provided.
Campus parking is regulated for paid meter and valid permits during the entire year including those times when school is not in session. During hours of regulation, every vehicle must display a permit available from the Parking office. Guests should use a metered space or stop by the Parking Services office to pick up a permit. Students are responsible for picking up a permit prior to a guest's arrival. There are designated times when permit spaces are not regulated. Consult individual lot signs to identify times when permit spaces are open to the public.
POLICE AUTHORITY
The police officers employed by UW-Stout have the authority and responsibility to investigate all crimes which occur on campus. The department's territorial jurisdiction consists of all property owned by UW-Stout and that portion of any public road or highway passing through such property and immediately adjoining it.
The authority, responsibility, and training of department police officers is the same as any other sworn police officer in Wisconsin. All UW-Stout police officers are sworn law enforcement professionals certified by the Wisconsin Department of Justice and have full arrest authority. Newly hired officers must complete a 400 hour certification course and have at least 60 college credit hours (Associate degree). Current officers must complete a minimum of 24 hours additional training each year to maintain certification.
