2008 Mini-Workshops

Mini-workshops are held 10:30-Noon, on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
Institute faculty, participants, and resource persons will provide special topic presentations (1.5 hours and mini-workshops (4.5 hours). Choose one mini-workshop or 3 special topics to attend.

MW-1 Healing the Wound: the Family’s Journey through Chemical Dependency
Faculty: Matt Karayan, MA, LADC, Buffalo, Minnesota
This mini-workshop will look at the family dynamics and motivation that enable chemical dependency and how the family can interrupt the cycle. The discussion will continue with how to help the family work through anger and finally what is detachment with love and what does it look like in practice.

MW-2  Methamphetamine: The Addiction, The Addiction Treatment, Gender Specific Treatment Planning

This session will focus on Methamphetamine pharmacology, neuropharmacology, brain behavior and the dopaminergic reaction in the brain. Key issues will include:

MW-3 Helping People with Problem Gambling - This training will offer each participant an understanding of:  the assessment process for diagnosis, the progression of compulsive gambling, strategies for primary treatment and the impact of gambling on family members.

MW-4 Movement Therapy: A Powerful Way to Be
Faculty: Wendy Martell, MSW, CADC, Certified Trauma Counselor, Nia White Belt, Merrill, Wisconsin
Learn how moving the body can create movement in recovery! Research recommends exercise for overcoming addictions, as well as other issues related to the body, such as domestic or sexual abuse, trauma, eating disorders, anxiety and depression. Movement therapy is recognized as a process for expressing a relapse prevention strategy. This workshop will introduce Nia, or Neuromuscular Integrated action, as “fusion fitness” for holistic wellness. Nia is a blend of martial arts, dance, and healing energy intended to integrate body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Through simple techniques and meaningful music, you will discover “the joy of movement” for yourself and your clients to embrace greater health.

MW-5 Spring Forest QiGong
Faculty: Char Lusher, RN, BSN, Med, Mankato, Minnesota
Qigong is a form of Chinese medicine that has been practiced in China for over five thousand years. Qigong uses mental concentration, breathing techniques and body movements to balance the body’s energy. Blocking of energy channels can lead to illness and disease. There are thousands of forms of Qigong, some clouded in mystery and secrecy.In this workshop we will focus on Spring Forest QiGong (SFQ) an easy-to-learn form developed by Master Chunyi Lin. SFQ is one of many forms of complementary medicine now being used in hospitals and clinics to enhance patients’ abilities to more quickly recover from chronic illness and pain, addiction and a variety of other health concerns. Nurses, counselors, teachers and other helping professionals could benefit from this workshop.

MW-6. What are Twelve-Step Programs and What is the Evidence to Support (2 mornings plus AA meeting)

This mini-workshop will acquaint participants with various 12-step programs and how to use them effectively. Participants will learn:

MW-7 The Power of Animals in Therapy
Faculty: Chris Zaglifa, MSW, LCSW, CADC, Wausau, Wisconsin
John Larson, Judge, Missoula, Montana
Ron Lessard, CADC III, Chippewa Falls, WI

Participants will become familiar with the theory and practical application of animal-assisted therapy and provide examples and demonstrations of incorporating animals in a variety of settings and treatment programs.

MW-8 Strategies for Taking Care of Self
Faculty: Bill Beaton, CADC III
This experienced counselor will encourage participants to examine various personal and professional issues to enhance the experience and effectiveness in their professional lives. There will be a presentation by the group leader, but the primary teaching tool will be group process.
