7th Biennial Wisconsin Migrant/Latino Conference
The 7th Biennial Wisconsin Migrant/Latino Manos Juntas Conference will be held from September 10-11, 2007 at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center near the Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee.
This conference, led by the Wisconsin League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), provides a forum for migrant service agencies, employer groups, and Latino organizations to come together to share their expertise and experience, joining efforts to improve partnerships in our communities throughout Wisconsin.
The theme for this year’s conference is:
“Promoting Success for Migrants/Latinos.”
Sessions will focus on issues regarding:
- Health care and the disparities among migrants/Latinos due to inadequate access to primary health care services, especially the most basic medical, dental, and mental health services.
- Education/technology opportunities
- Available social services and the impact on the community
- Employment including both opportunities and protections provided to workers under state and federal laws, and rights of undocumented workers
- Leadership development, small business entrepreneurship within the Latino population
- Partnerships with businesses and agencies in the local community and statewide
- Legal Issues regarding the current status of immigration law, homeland security laws and proposals that affect immigrant and undocumented workers
- Housing including opportunities provided by lenders and the process for acquisition of housing
- Advocacy on behalf of this population to eliminate disparities and reduce the barriers of finances, language, culture and geographic location.
