CERAMICS SLIP-CASTING Jennifer Astwood
Three-day workshop, July 15-17 | $375
astwood photoThis hands-on workshop will teach you the basics of slip casting and will include creating a slip-cast mold from an object in addition to developing ceramic forms from existing molds. Slip casting is a technique for making shapes not easily made on a wheel.astwood ceramic reindeer

Jennifer Astwood is an Assistant Professor of Industrial Design at UW-Stout. Her background includes working as a professional as well as an academic. She is a product designer by trade and has done work for the consumer electronic, medical, and houseware marketplace. Her passion is slip-casting for production in ceramics.

 

STONECARVING Julie Dierauer
Three-day workshop, July 15-17 | $375
Julie DierauerThis workshop in stone carving techniques provides basic instruction of carving in free form, representational, decorative, and lettering imagery. Dunnville sandstone used on the Mabel Tainter Memorial Theatre Building will be provided. Students will create smaller sized carvings using mallet, chisel, files, and sandpaper.

stone carvingJulie Dierauer is the resident stone sculptor from Dunnville Cutstone Company, an instructor in the art and design department at UW-Stout, and at UW-Marshfield/Wood County. She has a BS-Art Education from UW-Stout and a MA-Art from UW-Milwaukee. Her influences are Inuit carving and African carving.

 

BUILD YOUR OWN UKULELE Jiggs Kuboyama
Five-day workshop, July 14-18 | $575
Jiggs KuboyamaBuild your own four-string tenor ukulele. This class is designed to help a beginner understand how the principle of bent wood lamination is used to make a ukulele. All materials will be provided to build the ukulele.
The ukulele workshop will be extended to Monday - Friday, July 14-18.

Jiggs Kuboyama has taught classes on ukulele-making to inservice teachers, apprentices, journeymen, and community members. He has received recognition for his excellent instruction and distinguished service including a “Ukulele Treasure” certificate from the Ukulele Guild of Hawaii, citing his “dedication and commitment towards perpetuating the craft of the ukulele.”

 

FIGURE DRAWING Amy Fichter
Three-day workshop, July 15-17 | $375
Amy FitcherStudents will learn by drawing from a live model and building the major muscle groups of the body with clay on a plastic skeletal model. Fast and slow gesture drawings will enhance students’ abilities to immediately grasp the pose and proportion of the model. Students will spend time focusing on the structural and expressive qualities of the skull and facial features, and will also experiment with drawing media and scale.

Amy Fichter teaches Life Drawing at the UW-Stout. Amy’s work has always focused on the body and its weight, expressiveness, and power. Her drawings attempt to record the unique gestures she has observed of loved ones – learning what is only theirs, and yet, also, common to all.

 

METAL CASTING Ron Verdon
Three-day workshop, July 15-17 | $375
Ron VerdonThis workshop provides participants with demonstrations and hands-on activities that will explore the creative development of lost-wax casting projects. Modeling with wax and non-wax materials will provide participants with a range of design and technical experiences that will expand their understanding of design and the casting process.
metals castingRon Verdon, Professor of Art and Design at UW-Stout has been teaching art metals for more than thirty years. He presents many workshops on casting, sculptural and decorative metals and design. His work appears in publications, exhibitions and collections. His extensive experience ranges from casting, stone-setting, hot and cold forging, fabrication and forming techniques.
