Course Objectives

  1. Provide a background to the “Secret War” in Laos.
  2. Describe the historical, socio-cultural and political context influencing the unique experiences of the Hmong in the U.S.A.
  3. Provide an introduction to the Hmong social institutions; e.g., religion, gender roles, and clan system.
  4. Analyze cultural pressures affecting the refugee
    experiences of the Hmong in the U.S.A.
  5. Introduce Hmong music, contemporary film and
    literature.

Identify resources on the web for further study.

Students will either write a term paper or conduct research for a specific project. For example, educators may want to develop lesson plans for their classroom or design a presentation. Others may want to address a special problem and solution in providing ethnic sensitive practice in a workplace setting.
