Course Objectives
- Provide a background to the “Secret War” in Laos.
- Describe the historical, socio-cultural and political context influencing the unique experiences of the Hmong in the U.S.A.
- Provide an introduction to the Hmong social institutions; e.g., religion, gender roles, and clan system.
- Analyze cultural pressures affecting the refugee
experiences of the Hmong in the U.S.A. - Introduce Hmong music, contemporary film and
literature.
Identify resources on the web for further study.
Students will either write a term paper or conduct research for a specific project. For example, educators may want to develop lesson plans for their classroom or design a presentation. Others may want to address a special problem and solution in providing ethnic sensitive practice in a workplace setting.
