Welcome!
Thank you for selecting the University of Wisconsin-Stout to continue your education. We are proud to include you among our students and want to do our best to help make your college experience successful.
The registration program is just one part of your overall “orientation” to UW- Stout. This is the time you’ll meet with an advisor in your declared major and register for fall classes.
When you return to campus in the fall, your orientation will continue with “Week One”, a schedule of events including laptop distribution and training, welcome ceremonies and receptions, an on-campus job fair, sessions on campus services, and much more.
Please read through this site to learn about the preparations you need to make now before you attend registration. Review the check list to make sure you’re taking care of everything. If you have questions, please contact us in the Advisement Center.
See you soon!

What are the dates for Summer Registration?
There are six dates when registration for new transfer students will take place: Friday, April 11; Friday, May 2; Thursday, May 22; Friday, May 23; Thursday, July 24; and Friday, July 25. Plan on a four-hour time commitment (8 a.m.-12 p.m.) or (11:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.).
How do I reserve my date?
You must call the Advisement Center (715/232-1465) to schedule your registration date. Space is limited each day; therefore available space and the date we receive your call will determine your registration date.
What if I can’t attend any of the scheduled dates?
These are the dates when advisors will be available to meet with new transfer students, and meeting with an advisor is required for registration. Priority will be given to students who can attend these dates. If you cannot attend any of these dates your next opportunity will be during the week before classes begin in the fall.
Should my parents come with me?
Parents or friends are welcome to attend registration with you; however, there will not be any special programming for them. Some of the required activities will take place in classrooms, labs, or meeting places with limited seating. Therefore, do not expect to be together the whole time you are here.
What exactly happens on this day?
This is the time you will meet with an advisor in the major you’ve declared to:
- review your transfer credits,
- discuss what courses you still need to take to complete the degree,
- decide what courses would be best to take in the fall, and
- register for those courses.
Advisors will have studied your transfer credits prior to the registration day and will be ready to suggest what classes you should take.
Make sure you send final, official transcripts from all schools you’ve attended to the Admissions Office, 124 Bowman Hall. Advisors cannot adequately recommend courses if the transfer equivalency report is not up-to-date.
How long will it take?
Be prepared for at least four hours. Students are required to attend informational sessions and computer training, which is done in groups. Meetings with an advisor will be one-to-one. There will likely be waiting time between some sessions; however, this will be minimal. There will be other responsibilities you may take care of during your waiting time. Late arrivals cannot “slip in” once the program has begun, and will be required to reschedule.
If you are traveling from a long distance, consider coming the night before your registration day so you will be refreshed and ready, especially if you are scheduled for the morning program. We have rooms available in a residence hall (rates are $9.50 per person per night). Details about reserving a room will be sent with your confirmation letter. If you prefer to stay in a hotel, see the list at www.menomonie.com and click on “Dunn County Tourism”.
Is any testing required for registration?
Maybe. registration in English and Mathematics courses will depend upon credit earned in those subjects at your previous institution. The transfer equivalency report you receive from UW-Stout's Admissions Office will indicate whether transfer credit has been awarded in English (i.e. ENGL 101) and/or Mathematics (i.e. MATH 110). Note: MATH-xxx represents an undetermined skill level, so cannot be used for registration purposes.
If no transfer credit is awarded in these subjects, we can use your high school ACT test results. Send them to Admissions, 124 Bowman Hall or check online to see if you've already done so (on Access Stout, under Admission and Placement Test Results). If you feel your ACT results would be out-of-date or you never took it, then you will need to take the Wisconsin English and Mathematics Placement Tests (EPT and MPT). Test dates and registration instructions can be found at: http://testing.wisc.edu/ .
I took college courses while in high school, can they be used in my degree at UW-Stout?
If you took courses through Post Secondary Education Options (PSEO), Youth Options Program (YOP), Advanced Placement (AP), or International Baccalaureate (IB) while in high school, the credits earned may be transferable to UW-Stout. Have official records or transcripts of this work sent to our Admissions Office (124 Bowman Hall). It may make a difference in your schedule of classes.
What about lunch?
We will have light refreshments, but we will not be serving lunch. We can recommend several places on campus and in the Menomonie area if you would like a full meal. Just ask when you check-in.
What if I’m not sure about my major anymore?
It is assumed new students have researched their interest area/major and are ready to schedule classes based on that choice. The day of registration is not structured for in-depth inquiry and career exploration. If you need assistance in exploring majors and careers we recommend you do one of the following:
• read about UW-Stout’s degree programs at www.uwstout.edu/programs/;
• read about our Career Exploration Services at www.uwstout.edu/career; or
• visit the campus to speak with a career exploration advisor in the Advisement Center (715/232-1465).
Do this before your registration day so you are truly ready to register.
Is there a fee for registration and orientation?
A non-refundable orientation fee of $100.00 is charged to all new students in their first semester. This one-time fee covers the cost of the summer registration program, portions of the fall “Week One” schedule, and helps support the year-round operations of the Advisement Center. This charge will appear on your fall billing statement. There is no orientation charge for others who attend with you.
