New Student Registration Sign-up

Welcome!

Thank you for selecting the University of Wisconsin-Stout to continue your education.  We are proud to include you among our students and want to do our best to help make your college experience a successful one.  The Advisement Center is responsible for coordinating the new student registration programs. You will participate when you come to campus one day this summer. A professional staff person — your First Year Advisor — will then continue to work with you during your freshman year.

The new student registration program in June is just one part of your overall “orientation” to UW-Stout and the college experience.  The purpose for the summer program is to introduce you to the academic requirements of the university and your degree program and to help you schedule your first semester of classes.  When you return to campus in the fall your orientation will continue with “Week One”, a schedule of events including laptop distribution and training, welcome ceremonies and receptions, an on-campus job fair, sessions on campus services, and much more.

Read through the following information to learn about our program and the preparation you need to make.

See you soon!

Questions?

What are the dates for Summer Registration?

There are eight dates when new student registration for freshmen will take place: Tuesday, June 10, Wednesday, June 11, Thursday, June 12, Friday, June 13, Tuesday, June 24, Wednesday, June 25, Thursday, June 26, and Friday, June 27.

Is it better to attend one of the earlier dates?

No.  The programming for each registration day is the same and offers students an equal opportunity to register for classes that are appropriate for their degree program.   There is no advantage to attending on an earlier date.

How do I reserve my date?

All students must make a reservation to attend one of the June registration days. Visit New Student Registration Sign-up (link) to request your preferred date and respond to a series of questions that your First Year Advisor uses to make a schedule of classes.  Please also select a second date in the event we are not able to honor your preferred choice. Reservations will be confirmed on the basis of the date your request is received and available space for that day.  Confirmation letters will be sent by postal mail.

What if I can’t attend any of the scheduled dates?

If you cannot attend any of the available dates, select "I am unalbe to attend any of these dates" on the survey.  We will notify you when an alternative date in month of August is determined.

Should my parents come with me?

Yes!  Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend the June registration program with you.  There will be times during the day when you and your parents attend sessions together, and times when you will follow separate agendas.

What if I’m not so sure about my major anymore?

If you’re having doubts about the major you’ve chosen, or are undecided and would like to discuss some possibilities, please call the Advisement Center, (715/232-1465), or send us an email at: orientation@uwstout.edu. One of our advisors will be happy to help you learn more about majors and careers.
Note: The registration day is not structured for in-depth inquiry and career exploration.  We assume students have done this prior to coming to a registration program, so any advance help we can provide to you will make for a much more successful registration day.

Is any testing required for registration?

Registration in English and Mathematics courses will depend upon the results of your ACT test.  If you haven’t taken the ACT test yet, make arrangements to do so this spring.  Contact your guidance counselor for information about test dates.

Most campuses in the UW System use the Wisconsin English and Mathematics Placement Tests for registration in these subjects.  You should plan to take these tests if you are considering attending another UW school, but they will not be used at UW-Stout.

How does my ACT score convert to Math and English placement?

Registration for English and Mathematics courses will depend on a student’s ACT results

I took college courses while in high school; can they be used in my degree at UW-Stout?

If you have taken courses through Post Secondary Education Options (PSEO), Youth Options Program (YOP), Advanced Placement (AP), or International Baccalaureate (IB), the credits earned may be transferable to UW-Stout.  Have official records or transcripts of this work sent to our Admissions Office, 124 Bowman Hall as soon as they are ready.  It may make a difference in your schedule of classes.

How long is the registration day?

Be prepared for a full day, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Late arrivals will be required to reschedule, and leaving early is not an option.  When requesting your registration date, plan carefully around your schedule and your parents’ schedules to be sure you don’t have conflicting obligations.  If you are traveling from a long distance, consider coming to Menomonie the night before your registration day so you will be refreshed and ready for the full day.  We have rooms available in a residence hall for a fee.  Details about reserving a room will be sent with your confirmation letter. If you prefer to stay in a hotel, see the list at www.menomonie.com and click on Dunn County Tourism.

What about lunch?

The University Dining Service will be offering box lunches for our registration attendees at a cost of $7.49 per person.  Additional information will be included with your confirmation letter.  Be prepared to include payment at that time.  Lunch tickets are non-refundable.

Is there a fee for registration and orientation?

A non-refundable orientation fee of $100.00 is charged to all new students in their first semester.  This one time fee covers the cost of the June registration program, portions of the fall “Week One” schedule, and helps support the First Year Advising program in which you will be involved next year. This charge will appear on your fall billing statement.  There is no orientation charge for others who attend with you.

What is a Learning Community?

Learning communities are a First Year Experience option that links 25-30 students with a common interest together in 2-3 courses.  These groups participate in events that complement classroom activities and are assigned to a specific floor or living area when possible.

Students benefit from participation in a learning community by:

· developing friendships with like-minded students and faculty

· participating in out-of-classroom activities that reinforce learning

· engaging with the campus and community
