Welcome to University of Wisconsin-Stout's English as a Second Language (ESL) Institute. This ESL program offers English immersion courses to non-native English speakers who would like to communicate more effectively and improve their performance in their professional, academic and personal lives. Classes are small (20 or fewer students), and sessions are eight weeks long, beginning in September, January, March and June. Students in the ESL program study English 20 hours a week, including time in a computer lab.


The ESL Institute offers four levels of instruction. After being tested on arrival at the Institute, students will be placed into an appropriate level. Most students spend between a semester and two years to complete the program.  Upon successful completion of the entire ESL program, ESL students can be accepted directly into UW-Stout and begin taking regular academic courses if they meet UW-Stout academic requirements. They do not need to take the TOEFL test, re-apply to Stout, or pay an additional application fee.

Application Information

ESL Institute Application

If you want to apply for ESL study only, you must submit the following:

  1. Complete the International Student Application for Admission. The application can be found here or completed online.

  2. Application fee of $50.

  3. Financial document or bank statement indicating you have sufficient funds necessary to meet all expenses for the time it takes to complete your ESL program.

  4. Official transcripts (translated into English) from all secondary and post-secondary schools attended.

  5. Copy of your passport page showing your correct name. Passports can be scanned and emailed to globaled@uwstout.edu.

  6. Permanent address in your home country.

Conditional Degree Application

If you want to apply for conditional acceptance into a degree program, you must submit the following:

  • Complete the International Student Application for Admission. The application can be found here or completed online.

  • Application fee:

    • Undergraduate – $94.
      This includes the ESL program application fee of $50 as well as the undergraduate application fee of $44.

    • Graduate – $106.
      This includes the ESL program application fee of $50 as well as the graduate application fee of $56.

  • Official financial document or bank statement indicating you have enough funds necessary to meet one year of degree study.  

  • Official transcripts (translated into English) from all secondary and post-secondary schools attended. 

  • Copy of your passport page showing your correct name. Passports can be scanned and emailed to globaled@uwstout.edu.
  • Permanent address in your home country.

Computer

All students are enrolled in the eStout program. The mandatory program is included in the tuition cost. Through this program, each student is issued a computer, software, computer support and on-campus wireless Internet connectivity. The set fee is required for all full-time students. Visit the eStout website to learn more. Please note, the summer program may have different arrangements; contact the ESL Institute at 42 Harvey Hall.

We do not encourage students to bring personal computers due to the lack of software service.
