The University of Wisconsin-Stout Symphonic Band will present its annual winter concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, in the Great Hall of the Memorial Student Center.

Tickets are $5 and are available online, at the Service Center in the Memorial Student Center, 715-232-1122, and at the door.

The concert will present music that the Symphonic Band students have been studying this semester and features unique-sounding works, said Associate Professor Aaron M. Durst, band director.

UW-Stout’s Symphonic Band will present its annual winter concert Sunday, Dec. 3, in the Great Hall of the Memorial Student Center.“I wanted to choose pieces that were challenging to play but also fun, not only for the band but for the audience. These selections present concepts presented in a way that I hope will engage the audience and get them to think about the music,” Durst said.

The selections include “Fractures in Time” by Michael Sweeney, which presents different facets of time and includes aleatoric passages; “Speak to Me” by Dana Wilson, which features a dialogue between instruments on a simple tune; and “Tight Squeeze” by Alex Shapiro, which explores chromaticism and syncopation against a prerecorded electronic soundtrack.

Also on the program is “Festive Dance” from Charles Gounod’s grand opera “Faust” and “Pantomime” by Remy Magliocco, which features student William Le, of Mosinee, on accordion.

To help celebrate the approaching holidays, the band will also perform “Russian Christmas Music” by Alfred Reed, based on an ancient Russian Christmas carol; “Christmas Travelogue” featuring Christmas themes from many countries arranged by James Curnow; and closing with “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson.

In addition, the Tower Saxophone Quartet will perform two movements from “Petit Quatuor” by Jean Francaix and “Funk-a-Lot” by Peter Lehel.
