Commencement tradition continues with Graduation Buffet

A rite of spring returns Saturday when UW-Stout holds commencement ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Johnson Fieldhouse. Another rite of spring returns after the diplomas have been passed out — the Graduation Buffet at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. in the Memorial Student Center.

Hundreds of students and their families will gather in the Great Hall — a short walk from the fieldhouse — for a feast that will include four kinds of salad, three main dishes, three side dishes, breads and dessert. Wine and champagne can be ordered by the bottle, and graduates also can order a custom cake with their photo on it.

The buffet began about 25 years ago, dating to just after the student center opened in 1985. It wasn’t held last year, however, when the student center was closed for a yearlong, $19 million renovation. Among the changes were updates to the Great Hall on the second floor.

"Those attending find it to be an awesome meal and a great way to simplify the day for everyone,” said Ann Thies, director of University Dining Services. “Everyone gets their own table set for their exact numbers.”

Graduates and guests also can attend a short reception with refreshments after graduation in the Multipurpose Room of the Sports and Fitness Center.
