First of five Spanish language films to screen Sept. 9

The speech communication, foreign languages, theatre and music department at UW-Stout will screen a series of five Spanish language films starting in September.

The department received a Spanish Film Club grant of $1,250 from Pragda, a New York-based Spanish and Latin American film distribution company.

The Spain-USA Foundation is designed to promote, support and develop Spanish cultural and educational activities in the U.S.

The series also is co-sponsored by UW-Stout's College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; Multicultural Services; the office of International Education; and the Honors College.

The films will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Mondays Sept. 9, 16, 23, 30 and Oct. 7, in Harvey Hall Theatre. There will be no charge. The films are open to the public.

The films, their Spanish titles in parentheses and their directors are:

- "The Delay" ("La Demora") — Rodrigo Plá″

- "The Return" ("El Regreso") — Hernán Jiménez

- "With My Heart in Yambo" ("Con mi corazón en Yambo") — María Fernanda Restrepo

- "Chico and Rita" ("Chico y Rita") — Fernando Trueba

- "Southern District" ("Zona Sur") — Juan Carlos Valdivia

Students can use the films for extra credit or as writing assignments in Spanish courses. Instructors in other areas also will be able to offer the films as extra credit, explained Martha Wallen, UW-Stout foreign language instructor. Approximately 100 students are minoring in Spanish.

The university doesn't offer a degree in Spanish.

"A Spanish language film festival also would be especially valuable for our business and hospitality majors, who welcome opportunities to increase their knowledge of the Spanish-speaking world," Wallen said.
