Campus taking part in annual Recyclemania competition

February 25, 2013

UW-Stout is competing for the seventh straight year in Recyclemania, a friendly competition among universities and colleges in the U.S. and Canada. The goal is to promote recycling and reduction of waste on campuses.

More than 600 colleges and universities are competing, including many from the UW System and around Wisconsin, impacting 6.2 million students and staff. Last year participating schools recycled and composted 94.4 million pounds of trash and reduced greenhouse gases by nearly 149,000 metric tons.

Advanced Disposal of Eau Claire will award $1,500 for sustainable programs to the school that finished the highest in the contest. UW-Stout won last year and UW-Eau Claire won in 2011.

The schools will be tracking their recycling for compost, commingled (can, bottles, paper), cardboard, electronic waste and trash, according to Sarah Rykal, UW-Stout environmental sustainability coordinator.

UW-Stout is planning several events on campus in the coming months to help raise awareness about recycling and the contest.

The campus also has initiated several changes recently regarding sustainability:

•   The I Love Tap Water campaign continues to expand. It involves adding water bottle filling stations to drinking fountains to help replace use of commercially bottled water. The campus has 50 such stations. Water poured at the stations since 2010 equals 840,000 commercially sold bottles of water.

•   A new composting and recycling program allows all students, faculty, staff and campus visitors to divert waste from landfills by recycling and composting in all buildings on campus.

•   The Just Enough Energy Conservation campaign is focused on reducing energy consumption of employees.

•   The campus began participating in the Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment and Rating System — STARS — a new national program to encourage sustainability on campuses.

Last year UW-Stout ranked as the second-most energy-efficient campus in the UW System.
