Campus hosting events to commemorate Veterans Day

November 6, 2012

Three events are scheduled at University of Wisconsin-Stout to commemorate Veterans Day, which is Sunday, Nov. 11.

The events, all free, are sponsored by UW-Stout’s Ally Initiatives, Veterans Club and ROTC program.

•   The documentary “Restrepo,” will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Great Hall of the Memorial Student Center. It chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers to Afghanistan's Korengal Valley.

•   Veteran Jim Harris from We Help War Victims will present “After Effects of the War,” at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Cedarwood and Maplewood rooms of the Memorial Student Center.

•   A Remembrance Roll Call will begin at noon Monday at the amphitheater on the east side of the Memorial Student Center. The names of military personnel who have died in the past year will be read, and the National Moment of Silence will be observed at 1:11 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the event will be inside the student center.

The Veterans Club also will help sponsor a Veterans Day Tribute Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts in Menomonie. Music will be by the Dudley Markham and Friends band. Proceeds will benefit Jason Church, a Menomonie native who was seriously injured recently while serving in Afghanistan. For more information or to order tickets go to the Mabel Tainter website.

About 300 military veterans are enrolled at UW-Stout, which has been named a Military Friendly school the past three years by G.I. Jobs magazine.
