Athletic director, assistant director on NCAA committees

August 27, 2012

The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and universities around the Midwest will be well-represented this year in at least two NCAA Division III sports. UW-Stout Athletic Director Duey Naatz and Assistant Director Erin Sullivan are serving on the national football and volleyball committees, respectively.

Naatz is starting his first year while Sullivan is beginning her second year. Both have four-year appointments. They were chosen by the NCAA via an application and selection process. Naatz is a former Blue Devil head football coach and Sullivan a former Blue Devil assistant women’s basketball coach.

Duey Naatz“Anytime Stout is represented on NCAA committees, it reflects on the school. It’s a pretty big deal,” Naatz said. “It’s a way to represent our league and region and give back a little bit.”

Their eight-member committees handle sport administrative issues, oversee the selection process for the national tournaments and help run the tournaments, including the championship games. They will have regular teleconferences during the season and attend a national conference in Indianapolis, home of the NCAA.

Naatz and Sullivan may not be of any specific help to UW-Stout, however. If any national tournament issues involving the Blue Devils arise, they won’t be allowed to participate in committee decision-making to avoid a potential conflict of interest.

Naatz and Sullivan hope to provide solid representation for the region and WIAC, of which UW-Stout is a member. “The WIAC is really a respected league around the nation,” Sullivan said of the conference, which earlier this month celebrated its 100th anniversary with a banquet in Madison.
