Art student designs logo for city fest

May 14, 2012

Artwork by a UW-Stout student will be a big part of the new SummerDaze festival, which debuts Friday through Sunday in downtown Menomonie.

Elizabeth Schultz, of Franklin, an art major with a graphic design concentration, designed the festival logo. She saw an online posting from Main Street of Menomonie, the event sponsor, and volunteered. She submitted two designs, and Main Street chose one with orange sun rays, a yellow sun and a silhouette of the city skyline.

“I could tell they wanted something uplifting. It’s an inviting, happy image,” said Schultz, a senior who will graduate in December. “When you think of summer, you definitely think of sunshine and being outside and having fun.”

She started with hand-drawn sketches and then refined them on computer software, a process that took her several weeks this spring in-between attending classes.

“Our organization was looking for a logo that would capture the excitement of our upcoming event, yet include the community feel within it, and I think Liz did that perfectly” said Joanie Dulin, Main Street executive director.

Schultz said she has enjoyed seeing her logo downtown on promotional materials for the festival. For a schedule of events, including a chalk art event Friday night at UW-Stout’s Clock Tower Plaza, and more information go to www.mainstreetmenomonie.org/summerdaze.
