Introduction
SPIRITS is an organization which brings people of different Native American backgrounds together with other non-Indian students to foster an awareness of the rich cultural heritages of Native Americans.
SPIRITS was formed in 1992 and membership is represented by Wisconsin Indian Nations, including the Ho Chunk (Winnebago), the Menominee, the Ojibwe (Bad River, Lac du Flambeau, Lac Courte Oreilles, Mole Lake, Red Cliff; and St. Croix Reservation Communities), the Oneida, the Potawatomi (Forest County), and the Stockbridge-Munsee, as well as from other Indian nations such as the Sioux (the Dakota, the Lakota and the Nakota).
SPIRITS is active on the UW-Stout campus and members attend student functions at other UW System campuses.
All UW-Stout Faculty and students are welcome and encouraged to attend meetings and events.
Meeting Times
SPIRITS meets every Mondays: 5:45 pm - 6:45 pm in the White Pine Room of the Memorial Student Center.
Club Activities and Services
SPIRITS is engaged in activities throughout the year. Scheduled trips include:
- American Indian Native Alaskan Tourism Conference (recruitment booth)
- Native American Tourism of Wisconsin Conference ( recruitment booth
- Hosting Native American Tourism of Wisconsin, February (general meeting)
- Native American Awareness Night, October (cultural awareness)
- Native American Awareness Month, April (current issues, logos and other related topics)
- Fry bread fund raiser ( on campus)Ho-Chunk Pow-Wow (operated food booth)
- Wankanda Mounds (collaborated with UW-Eau Claire to work on mounds)
