University of Wisconsin - Stout

Program Overview

Stoutward Bound is a summer bridge program designed to support and strengthen American-ethnic minority students college experience. This program is open to incoming, first-year students of color who are admitted to UW-Stout for Fall 2010.

To ensure your preparation and transition to college, the Stoutward Bound Program enables a cohort of accepted incoming freshmen for fall 2010 to participate in a “Jump Start” program that allows them to become oriented to college LIFE by:

LEARN about the campus community first hand

IMPROVE Strategies for academic success

FOCUS on academic achievement and success by attending real classes

EARN 5 college credits

Students benefit from participation in a learning community by:

  • Developing friendships with likeminded students and faculty
  • Out-of-the classroom activities that reinforce classroom learning
  • Meaningful engagement to the campus and community

Plus…it’s a great experience!!

Students will be enrolled in two credited courses that count in fall registration:

  • SPCOM100-017-Fundamentals of Speech (2 Credits)
  • PSYH 110, General Psychology (3 Credits)

Tuition for SPCOM and PSYCH will be charged to your fall financial aid package.

Students will enter their fall term with a lightened course load, allowing them time to focus on their remaining academics.

Students will come to campus two weeks early, stay in university housing, eat in university facilities and attend structured class formats Monday through Friday. There will also be activities for you to participate in. And of course you’ll have free time too. You will be prepared to transition to WEEK ONE orientation.

Students will live together in a learning community in South Hall.  Early registration is encouraged to ensure your placement.
