Program Overview

The Springboard Summer Program (SSP) is a highly structured learning community environment that provides early access to math for underrepresented freshman students of color.

The goal of this summer bridge program is to prepare first-year students of color to succeed in their first semester math course.  The SSP will provide the following:

 

 

  • Mastery of basic math
  • Prepare students to pass the Gateway Quiz with a score of 100%
  • Reduce the achievement gap between students of color and non-students of color
  • Earn 3 college credits

SSP will benefit students who participate by:

 

 

  • Providing an opportunity for early academic success through building confidence for college-level coursework.
  • Providing an opportunity to become familiar with the campus and the community, locate resources, and learn about opportunities for involvement.
  • Creating an environment for making lifetime friends while developing a sustained learning community throughout the first semester of college.

As a participant in the Springboard Summer Program students will:

 
  • Participate in a Math preparation course
  • Participate in PSYH 110, General Psychology (3 credits)
  • Attend classes Monday through Thursday
  • Receive room and board
  • Receive financial aid

PSYCH tuition will be charged to your fall financial aid package.

 

Students will arrive on campus two (2) weeks early (August 22–September 3, 2010), live in university housing and eat in the university’s dining facility.  Students will attend structured classes Monday through Thursday; free time is built into the program and students can participate in fun activities.

 

You will be prepared to transition to WEEK ONE orientation.

 

Students will live together in a learning community in South Hall.  Early registration is encouraged to ensure your placement.
