Profitable Sustainability Initiative (PSI)

The recognized returns—both environmental and financial—affirm that this has been a wise and impactful investment for the State of Wisconsin. Phase I program results have been documented and detailed in the Wisconsin Profitable Sustainability Initiative Phase 1 Report. Key benefits derived from the PSI Program, including preliminary Phase II results identified through the application of the PSI ROI calculator, are summarized below:

1.     The PSI program model has proven to be highly efficient and effective in producing both short-term and long-term profitable sustainability benefits for WI SMMs. No other comparable model exists.

2.     The highly-customizable PSI program model has proven to be highly attractive to participating WI SMMs because it:

a.     Drives direct assistance, unique to each company, to produce the highest impact and

b.     Is designed specifically for SMMs and reflects their operational realities and challenges.

3.     The ROI analysis of potential projects facilitates high-impact project selection and creates critical business cases for additional project work undertaken by participating companies outside PSI grant assistance.

4.     SMMs participating in the PSI Program are realizing rapid ‘break-even on investment’, averaging less than a year.

5.     SMMs participating in the PSI Pilot Program are realizing key competitive advantages including but not limited to improved cost reduction management, improved productivity, new product development, improved energy management, improved recycling and beneficial reuse of waste stream outputs, reduced hazardous materials in production, reduced fossil fuel consumption, and reduced emissions.

6.     Current projections compute an aggregate 47:1 return on Phase I and Phase II public investment at the end of three years; comparable returns can be expected in Phase III.

7.     The State of Wisconsin has made substantial strides forward as a national leader in profitable sustainability with the development and delivery of the PSI program, and through the program has made notable progress toward becoming the most sustainable manufacturing state in the U.S.

8.     The impressive results so far realized in Phase I and Phase II are attracting national interest and attention as a model of excellence for achieving profitable sustainability with rapid rollout.

9.     Positive project outcomes, along with application of the PSI ROI calculator, have stimulated over $11.7 million of additional investment match from participating SMMs. Even greater investment is expected with the completion of Phase I and Phase II implementation projects, and comparable match can be expected in Phase III.
