Kathryn Kujawa, Gindy Neidermyer and Jongeun Rhee will share the professorship, designed to attract and retain applied design faculty as well as acknowledge and honor leadership skills.
The three-year professorship provides a variable amount depending on endowments. For 2012-15 the amount is $5,300 a year, with funds to be spent according to state guidelines.
The professors’ goals include developing multimedia materials to enhance the academic program, providing travel for faculty and students to industry representatives; and developing a system for a yearly presentation of program activities to share with students, alumni and industry representatives.
The award was established by Lenore Landry, a 1945 graduate in home economics education. Landry, a UW System specialist, was respected nationally for her expertise in textiles and clothing.
The goals established by Kujawa, Neidermyer and Rhee are:
• Year one: new promotional materials for industry and precollege stakeholders; enhancement of the program website; and upgrading of the apparel design and development physical environment. Also included are steps to develop faculty and research opportunities with industry and to strengthen the visual identity of the program on campus.
• Year two: travel to current and potential stakeholders and development of partnerships with industry to enhance curricula. Objectives also include efforts to develop and secure funding and support for tours, on-site visits and panel discussions.
• Year three: finalization of scholarship funding for student development, projects and activities, such as a fashion show, student travel and awards.
A portion of the funds also will be used for student assistance in research and organization of materials.
The apparel design and development program has been offered as a B.S. degree since 2002. The university first offered the bachelor’s degree — then named clothing, textiles and design — in 1962.
