UW-Stout has installed a digital signage software system from StrandVision in Millennium Hall. The signage, displayed on 52-inch digital monitors, is in the building’s two main lobbies. The program is designed to take traditional liberal arts subjects — history, political science, sociology, anthropology and economics — and make those skills applicable in a professional business setting.

University of Wisconsin-Stout student-designed pants inflate, keeping workers safe

Fulfilling an assignment to create a safety-apparel product, a team of students in a functional-clothing design course at the school came up with what they call "suspension pants." Designed for construction workers using a harness, the pants can inflate in the event of a fall, protecting the worker from being injured.
Humane, law enforcement officers encourage speaking up about animal abuse

The people who handle animal cruelty cases — whether the cruelty was intentional or not — hopes the attention given to recent, local cases will encourage the public to take notice and speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. In the most recent case, two UW-Stout students left a German shepherd in a car on the Menomonie campus for more than two hours Sept. 3 with the windows shut. The dog died of heat stroke.

Buffer garden aims to keep lakes from going green

Last year, the members of the Tainter/Menomin Lake Improvement Association tossed barley bales into the lakes in an attempt to combat bacteria from phosphorus and nitrate. This year, they're turning to buffer gardens, made in part with some of that water soaked barley and lots of mulch, as well as lots of help from a UW-Stout biology class.

It's somewhat unusual for brothers to graduate from the same university on the same day, but it's even more unusual when they are thousands of miles from home. Elbek and Umar Kurbanov, from the central Asian nation of Uzbekistan, both graduated Saturday from UW-Stout. Elbek, 24, is receiving a bachelor's degree in applied science and Umar, 22, a degree in information technology management.

‘Retired’ Jefferson teacher gets Kohl award

It's unusual for a teacher who retired three years ago to receive a prestigious Kohl Fellowship, but then UW-Stout graduate Shari Foes is an unusual teacher. Although she retired as the family and consumer education instructor at Jefferson Middle School officially in 2006, she came back when the district had trouble finding a qualified successor. In March, Foes was honored with a select Kohl award, only 100 of which are given statewide each year by the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation.

UW-Stout graduate Katsina Darma of Nigeria received his bachelor's degree in vocational, technical and adult education in 1985. Darma returned to UW-Stout in January 2009 to begin his graduate studies in career and technical education, after saving for 20 years to do so.

Stout loses grant for Violence against Women

UW-Stout’s grant from the Office on Violence Against Women of the U.S. Dept. of Justice will conclude May 30, at the end of its current cycle. The university’s recent application for renewal was denied in September because more applications were submitted than the government was able to financially support. Stout was first awarded the grant in 2005, and achieved a renewal in 2007, both grants bringing $200,000 to campus. UW-Stout is eligible to reapply for the grant in a new cycle.
