Universal Borrowing (UB) is a library service that allows UW-Stout students and faculty/staff to check out books from other UW System libraries and receive them in only 1-5 business days. 

Step 1- Start at Library Home Page

Library Home PageConnect to the Stout Library Catalog from the Library Home Page.

If you are connecting from off-campus, click on "Catalog from off-campus".

Step 2 - Choose UW Library Catalogs/UB

Step 3 - Select Library Catalogs to Search

Select databasesSelect the database(s) you want to search.  Note the directions for selecting more than one database.  

Click Connect to connect to the selected databases OR

Click the Reset button to deselect any catalog(s) you have selected. 

Step 4 - Search the Selected Library Catalogs

Sample search for a biography of asmimovThe search.  You may want to change the search mode to Keyword Guided; just click on the tab, enter your terms, and then click on the Search button.

EX: A  Keyword-Guided search for a biography of Asimov. UWEC, UW-LaX and UW-Stout were selected as the catalogs to search.

Step 5 - Show Results

Results screen showing number of titles matching the search at each institution.The resulting screen will indicate the number of titles found at each institution using the search statement you entered.  Click on Show to see the titles.

Step 6 - Display of Items Found

Catalog screen; click on titleA list of available titles indicating which institution owns each title is shown.  Click on a title to display the record containing information on the item. 

Step 7 - Requesting an Item Be Delivered to UW-Stout for Your Use

Click on the Request button to initiate a request for the item.7A. Once a title is selected, a complete record shows.

Towards the bottom of the record, the holdings for each library that owns it will appear.

Check to see that the item is available (not checked out by someone else).

If available, click on the Request button on the top navigation bar.

 

 


Enter your Stout ID and last name7B. Fill in the requested information and click Login.

 

Choose "Universal Borrowing Request".  Then OK7C. Select Universal Borrowing Request from the drop down menu.  (Hold may be the default.) 
Then click OK.

 

Enter your Stout ID, pick up location, and comments.7D. Complete the form.

UW-Stout (Barcode):Enter your 7-digit UW-Stout ID number. 

Pick Up Library: The default location for item pickup is the UW-Stout Library's Circulation Desk.  Using the drop down menu, you may specify that the item be delivered to a library other than UW-Stout. 

Comments:
Distance Education students Specifiy you are a DE student and list specific course number.

One volume of a set: If your title has more than one volume, you will need to complete a separate request for each volume.  Indicate in the Comment box which volume you are requesting.

Click Submit Request.

Request was successful7E. If your request was completed correctly, you will receive this message.

If your request was not completed correctly, you will need to review the information entered for accuracy, re-enter your Student ID, and click Submit again.  If you still experience problems, call the Circulation Desk at (715) 232-1215.

You will be notified when the item arrives in the Library via your Stout email account. 

Step 8 - Check the Status of the Request

My Account button

Click on the My Account button on the top menu.  Your personal library information will display.  If the information on your item requested does not appear, try the request again.  If still unsuccessful, either call the Circulation Desk at (715) 232-1215 or use the Illiad online request form.
