Periodicals Collection
2nd Floor North is devoted to magazines, journals, and newspapers, commonly called "periodicals".
The library provides many full-text periodical articles through Indexes and Databases. But, when periodicals are not available electronically, you can get some titles in print from the stacks. Use the Periodicals Holdings list to see all titles that are available.
The periodicals stacks include paper and microfilm formats, arranged alphabetically by title.
Microfiche copies of magazines and journals are filed in the metal cabinets against the brick wall.
The P.I. Desk (Periodicals Information)
If you have trouble finding a journal, or need help with the microform equipment, the P.I. Desk is your next stop. Friendly student assistants are skilled at locating periodicals and using the equipment. They can also help with some of your computer related questions.
Scanners and Photocopiers
As periodicals cannot be checked out, scanners and a color copier are available for capturing photos and text in magazines and newspapers.
The color photocopier also scans materials; files then can be either saved or emailed.
Microform Reader / Printers
To view articles stored on microfilm or microfiche, use the equipment located by the brick wall. There you will find reader/printers and a reader that scans articles. If you are unfamiliar with microform systems, please visit your helpful library assistant at the P.I. Desk.
Other equipment such as photocopiers, stapler, scissors, etc. are also located along the wall.
Current Periodicals Display Area
In the Current Periodicals Display Area, you will find some of the current issues of selected, high-use magazines and journals. They are arranged alphabetically by title.
Due to their high use, periodicals are not checked out; but photocopying and scanning facilities are provided.
Newspapers
Newspapers are kept in hanging files in the last row of the stacks close to the Current Periodicals Display Area. The most current issues are on a display rack.
Help Phones
As you exit the stairway or elevator on any of the upper floors, you will see Help Phones which connect you with the Circulation Desk or the Reference Desk.
Direct your questions to the Circulation Desk when you can't find an item or to report problems with equipment or machines.
Direct questions regarding assistance in identifying and locating library materials, or on how to use the Stout Library Catalog or Indexes, to the Reference Desk.
Instructional Resources Service (IRS)
Visible through a window wall you will see the entrance to the Instructional Resources Service, where you can get your textbooks and other required class resources.
Although it is a part of the library, you must enter Instructional Resources from the separate staircase in the outside lobby, first floor, or through the west outside door of the building.
