Floor Map
Circulation Desk
The Circulation Desk is the service
point for checking out AV equipment, laptop computers, digital cameras, LCD projection units, books, and other
media from the library's circulating collections. You can also place holds on items that are checked out so you can use them when they are returned, or you can request searches for missing items. Your Student ID Card is required to
check out materials.

Research Guides
The kiosk near the Reference Desk
includes free materials explaining library services and policies, as well as maps of the library.
For directions on using specific library or web resources, or finding statistics, or factual information, look for guides to library resources for UW-Stout programs. Chances are we've put together resources you need to get started.

Reference Desk
Professional librarians provide guidance
on where to find information, deciding which database to use, or choosing or narrowing a topic. The Reference
Staff will also explain how to use electronic resources and specific reference tools; how to complete
Interlibrary Loan or Universal Borrowing
requests; and generally help you when you have trouble finding or identifying the information you need.
You can query by e-mail (Ask a Librarian) when you are not in the building. For more information, see Reference.
ALD Desk
Technology-trained student
workers staff the ALD desk during most library hours. The Access to Learning Desk students help
library users with computer, printer, scanner, software and email-related questions. They also canvas the entire building
to assist computer users and maintain public computer workstations.
Computer Stations and Stout Library Catalog
Computer stations located throughout the Library have web access with Microsoft Office Suite loaded on them. Access to campus software is also available on them.
Starting at the Library Home Page, search the Stout Library Catalog for books and AV materials. Or, search the Indexes and Databases to help identify magazine, journal, and newspaper articles on specific subjects. Many articles are available full-text online.
Printing Stations
The library has
centralized network printing. All print jobs from computers on all floors of the library are sent to the print
stations on the first floor by the Access to Learning Desk (ALD).
There are six laser printers: four black and white (10 cents a copy) and two color (20 cents a copy). Use your StoutOne card with a Flexline account, or community users may purchase a print card.
Laptop users will need to add these printers to their laptop.
Scanners
Scanners are available
for document scanning as well as image scanning. A high speed multi-page scanner is useful for students creating
e-portfolios. A slide scanner scans reverse transparencies (i.e. slides or 35mm film).
Photo-manipulation software is installed on the accompanying computers to further enhance the images.
Laptops Accessibility
The Library is
a wireless building that supports wide-spread use of
laptop computers without the need for direct hookups. But just in case your battery runs low on charge, the Library
also has added plug-in ports and electrical outlets for your use.
Reference Collection
Some items
you will identify in the Stout Library Catalog may have the location REFERENCE. They will be shelved in the
Reference Area by call number with all materials on similar topics shelved together. The
Reference collection includes handbooks, subject specialized encyclopedias and dictionaries, bibliographies, statistical
information, atlases, directories, style manuals, etc. Reference materials cannot be removed from the Library.
Print Index Area
Most indexes used for identifying
articles are available on the World Wide Web. Many of the online indexes also contain the full-text of the articles.
However, a few print indexes still exist and are arranged on the Index shelves alphabetically by title.

Open Reserve
In the northwest corner of the
Reference Area are library materials that have been placed on reserve, for in-library use, by instructors for specific
classes. These items can be identified through the Stout Library Catalog--use the Course Reserves tab.
Sometimes instructors place non-library materials on reserve (photocopies of articles, their own books, etc). These items are arranged in boxes marked with the instructor's name and placed in a separate section on the Open Reserve shelves.
Near the Reserve area is a VCR and DVD player for viewing Open Reserve materials.
Assistive Technology Area
Assistive Technology equipment at the library includes scanning, reading, and
voice recognition equipment that provides audio and visual access to library resources, including the
Stout Library Catalog and the Library Home.
Educational Materials Center (EMC)
The Educational Materials Center houses special materials for teacher education
students including a textbook collection, sample curriculum guides, computer software, and a collection of school
library materials featuring children's literature, young adult literature, children's magazines and children's audiovisual materials.
If you're in the teaching field, you'll certainly spend time here.
Materials in the EMC can be checked out at the Circulation Desk.
Group Study Areas
Near the Instruction Lab
are group study rooms. These rooms allow for small group discussion and
collaborative learning, but are not intended for individual study.
Rooms are equipped with boards which allow you to practice for classroom presentations, VCR and DVD players, and computers with both Web access and Microsoft Office Suite.
Library Instruction Lab
This room is
primarily for library instruction, arranged by classroom instructors. Librarians teach research sessions on
using the Stout Library
Catalog, Indexes and Databases, search engines
on the web and other information resources. When not used for library instruction, this area is open for student
use or other possible use as outlined in the Library Instruction Lab Use Guidelines. Check the calendar next to the lab door for open hours. Stations have Microsoft Office Suite and Web access.
Plug-in ports and wireless access for laptop computers is available as well.

Exhibit Area
An exhibit area is located in the main lobby of the library. There will be special exhibits for library-related events: Banned Book Week, Children's Book Week, National Library Week, etc.
The space is also available to campus groups and can be reserved at the library's administrative office (Room 220).
Food Cart
Also in the lobby area is a food cart. Open during the fall and spring semesters, students have access to snacks, drinks, and sandwiches.
