Library User Rights and Responsibilities

The policies outlined in this document have been established for the safety, security, and comfort of UW-Stout Library patrons.

Borrowing Privileges

UW-Stout students, faculty, and staff members with an active campus ID card are eligible to borrow University Library resources. Community members may use Library resources inside the building and may apply at the Circulation Desk for a community borrower Library account. No user may check out Library resources with another person’s ID card.

User Rights

  • Courteous assistance from Library staff
  • Access to Library resources, regardless of race, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or age
  • Library materials that are in good condition
  • A research and study environment free of harassment
  • A clean physical environment

User Responsibilities

  • Interact courteously with other users and Library staff
  • Keep Library materials clean, unmarked, and intact; UWS18.12(8)
  • Maintain a quiet environment in designated Quiet Study areas
  • Abide by campus and Library computer use guidelines
  • Refrain from behavior that hinders study, research, or other Library work
  • Provide valid identification upon request

Computer Workstation Policies

  • The Library provides computer workstations to facilitate the University’s mission objectives: scholarship, learning, teaching, research, and service
  • Community members may use designated Library computers for one hour per day. Requests for extended use of computers will be evaluated on an individual basis
  • The display of inappropriate materials on computers may be construed as a form of harassment prohibited by Federal and State Laws. Access and use violations of computer resources, including but not limited to the above, are strictly prohibited. All such violations will be treated seriously and will incur appropriate sanctions.
  • Accessibility stations are reserved for users with special requirements. Other users will be asked to relocate if a user with special requirements is present.

Building Use and Regulations

  • UW-Stout is a tobacco free campus. Tobacco use is prohibited on any property owned by UW-Stout. UW-Stout policy 92-55
  • Guns and other weapons are prohibited on University lands and buildings. UWS 18.10(3)
  • The Library has theft detection equipment. If attempted theft is suspected, Library staff will contact Campus Police. UWS 18.12(4)
  • For their own safety, children under age 16 must be supervised by an adult at all times.
  • Only service animals are allowed in the building. UWS 18.08(1)
  • Entrances, exits, stairwells, aisles, and book stacks must remain unblocked. UWS 18.07(5)
  • Solicitation or display of items for sale is prohibited in the Library. Permission to leave materials or post information inside or outside the building must be obtained from Library Administration. UWS 18.08(9) and UWS 18.11(8)
  • Bicycles, skateboards, roller blades, or other wheeled devices may not be used in the building, except for equipment that assists physically challenged individuals. UWS 18.10(8)
  • Before filming or taking photographs inside the Library, written permission must be obtained. See Stout policy at: http://www.uwstout.edu/webdev/content_dev.cfm

Food and Drink Policy

  • Food and beverages are permitted in the Library (excluding the Area Research Center/Archives).
  • Please keep the Library clean by properly disposing of waste.
  • Meet delivery people in the main lobby when ordering outside food.

Code of Conduct

  • Individuals who do not adhere to Library policies and guidelines may be asked to leave the Library and/or reported to Campus Police.
  • No person may intentionally take or conceal Library materials without prior check-out at the Circulation Desk. UWS 18.12(4)
  • Cell phones should be placed on silent or vibrate; calls should be taken quietly and moved to the lobby.
  • Cell phone use is prohibited on the 5th floor, which is a designated Quiet Study area.
  • Threatening behavior or unwanted attention toward another individual is disruptive and will be immediately reported to Campus Police. UWS 18.11(2)
  • Shoes, shirts, and proper hygiene are required at all times.

Lost And Found

Unattended items will be collected and held in the Lost and Found at the Circulation Desk. Lockers are available on the 4th floor to safeguard possessions while studying at the library. Keys to the lockers are available free of charge at the Circulation Desk.
