Reserves

The Library maintains a small open shelf reserve collection for instructors who want all students in their classes to study specified limited resources.  Library materials and instructor's personal materials for student use may be put on Open Reserve.

Library Materials

Location

    Open Reserve shelves in the Reference area on the Library's first floor.

Restrictions

  • In-building use of materials only.
  • A limit of 15 titles per course per semester may be placed on Open Reserve. This limit is necessary because of space and processing constraints.

How to Submit Requests for Open Reserve

  • Open Reserve Request Form or
  • Bring items to the Circulation Desk during library hours Monday through Friday or
  • Submit a list with complete information
    • Include the instructor's name, department, email address, telephone extension, office number and building, plus the complete course name and number.
  • List must be submitted each academic year
  • Fall lists may be designated to include fall, spring, and/or summer semesters.
  • Requests are processed in the order received; it is advantageous to submit as early as possible.
  • Instructors will be notified when the reserve list is received and being processed.

Maintenance of Open Reserve Request Lists

  • Circulation maintains a file of the Open Reserve Request lists during the semester.
  • Approximately three weeks before the end of each semester, all lists not designated to continue for the following semester will be returned to the instructor.
  • Instructors, please review continuing lists each semester and forward any changes to Circulation email: circulation@uwstout.edu.

Instructor's Personal Materials

Instructors may request that personal copies of books or audiovisual material be placed in the Open Reserve area.

Restrictions

  • In-building use only
  • Instructors that wish to have photocopies of articles or book chapters on reserve are strongly urged to use Electronic Course Materials due to copyright issues.

Copyright

  • Must be in compliance with the U.S. Copyright Law's fair use provision, Section 107 of the Title 17, U.S. Code, when providing the Library with one or more copies.
  • Library will assume that the instructor is in compliance at the point of Library staff accepting the copied item(s).
  • Section 107 permits the making of multiple copies for classroom use. Four factors govern the use of copyrighted materials in this instance, and UW Stout faculty need to consider them in determining fair use:
  1. Purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for non-profit educational purposes;
  2. the nature of the copyrighted work;
  3. the amount and substantiality of the portion of the work used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
  4. the effect on the potential market for or value of the copyrighted material.

How to place personal items on Open Reserve

  • Instructors are asked to write their name, the course number, and course name on each item.
  • The library will provide security for personal copies of books and videos.
  • All personal copies will be returned via campus mail at the end of each semester. Open Reserve items, including faculty personal copies, may not be checked out.

Alternatives to Open Reserve

  • Electronic Resource Materials have materials scanned and included in courseware.
  • Instructional Resources Service (IRS)
    • Material and assignments requiring closed reserve procedures are often better suited to the Instructional Resources Service.
    • In many instances they can create packets containing the desired information to be given to each student in the class. Some items can also be made available online.
