The Library has one Circulation Desk, located in the front lobby on first floor. View the virtual library tour to get acquainted with the library.
Purpose
The primary responsibility of Circulation is to provide for the borrowing and the return ("check out" and "check in") of library resources. The Circulation Desk is staffed all hours the building is open.
Services
- Check out and Check in - All library resources that can be taken out of the building must be checked out at the circulation desk. All resources must be returned to the Desk for processing, including special permission items. Please remember your Stout ID card.
- Renewals - Most library resources may be renewed either in person, by contacting the Circulation Desk . Materials may be renewed on-line from the Stout Library Catalog, Patron Info button. Some items are allowed only one renewal, some have no renewals. During the week of final exams, the last week of the semester, all resources need to be returned.
- Holds - An item currently checked out will be held upon its return for a patron requesting the "Hold". Holds may be placed on items that are checked out through the Stout Library Catalog Request button near the top of the Catalog screen or at the Circulation Desk.
- Recalls - An item checked out for loan may be recalled by any other University member who requires the use of the material. All circulating items are subject to recall. The person charging out a book or paper source will initially have a minimum two-week loan, if the item is recalled within that time frame. After the item has been out two weeks, any subsequent recall will generate an e-mail to the holder, asking the item be returned within seven days from the recall request.
- Copiers -General maintenance of all copy machines, reader/printers, and audiovisual equipment is performed by the Circulation Desk staff.
- Searches - A library resource, e.g., book, periodical issue, audiovisual media, etc. may appear to be missing at the time a patron seeks it. Please stop at the Circulation Desk and complete a "search request" if the needed item is not available and it is not charged out.
- Overdues and Billing - Three overdue notices are mailed beginning the day after the item was due. While a patron has overdue resources or outstanding bills, no additional items may be charged out. After an item is four weeks overdue it is billed as lost with a non-refundable $10 processing fee.
- Book Returns - There are two outdoor book returns. The one in the drive through is only for books. There is a second one under the window to the east of the front entrance. This return may be used for all types of media. There are also two returns at the circulation desk in the lobby.
- Video Booking - An instructor or student may arrange to have videocassettes held for use in a class presentation. Requests can by submitted online via the Video Booking request form or at the Circulation desk. Booking requests must be submitted a minimum of two weeks prior to the planned pick-up date. You will be notified with this e-mail confirmation: "Your booking request has been received."

Proxy for Faculty Check Out
Faculty and academic staff at UW-Stout may authorize another UW-Stout person, such as a student assistant or a department program assistant, to be a proxy for them, completing check out transactions at the library on their behalf. With the Proxy Patron feature, faculty-authorized persons will use their own UW-Stout ID cards, and the transaction will be charged to the requesting faculty member. Pick up a form at the Circulation desk or print the Proxy Patron Authorization form. This form must be completed and delivered to the Circulation desk—it can not be submitted online. You will receive an e-mail confirmation when the proxy patron authorization process is complete.
