Lexis Nexis: Academic is a comprehensive full text database covering national and international news, business and legal sources. These instructions will cover legal resources including:

Search Case Law and View Documents

Step 1 - Start at the Library Home Page (http://www.uwstout.edu/lib/).

Step 2 - Select Indexes and Databases.

Step 3 - Select Lexis Nexis under Major Vendors.

Search by Case Name:

A - Click on Legal tab
B - Select Federal & State Cases (right column)
C - Select Sources, ex: Federal & State Cases, combined (Note: Click on the Down Arrow to select cases U.S. Supreme Court, specific States, etc.)
D - Type in the Case Name, ex: Zurla v. Hydel
E - Click the Search button
F - The Case will be displayed

Search by Case Citation Number:

A - Click on Legal tab
B - Select Federal & State Cases (right column)
C - Select Sources, ex: Federal & State Cases, combined (Note: Click on the Down Arrow to select cases U.S. Supreme Court, specific States, etc.)
D - Type in the Case Citation Number, ex: 681 N.E.2d 148
E - Click the Search button
F - The Case will be displayed

Search Cases by Terms and Connectors:

A - Click on Legal tab
B - Select Federal & State Cases (right column)
C - Select Sources, ex: Federal & State Cases, combined (Note: Click on the Down Arrow to select cases U.S. Supreme Court, specific States, etc.)
D - Type in Keywords in the Terms and Connectors Search Box, ex: "golf ball" and negligence and "contact sport" (Note: Quotes are used to search for phrases)
E - Click the Search button
F - A List of Cases will be displayed, use Sort to List the Cases by Relevance
G - Click on the Case Name link
H - The Case will be displayed

Search Federal & State Codes and View Documents

Step 1 - Start at the Library Home Page (http://www.uwstout.edu/lib/).

Step 2 - Select Indexes and Databases.

Step 3 - Select Lexis Nexis under Major Vendors.

Search by Federal and State Codes:

A - Click on Legal tab
B - Select Federal & State Codes (right column)
C - Select Sources, ex: Federal & State Codes, Constitutions, Court Rules, combined (Note: Click on the Down Arrow to select federal or state codes, regulations, etc.)
D - Type in Keywords in the Terms and Connectors Search Box, ex: golf and caddies and Wisconsin (Note: Quotes are used to search for phrases)
E - Click the Search button
F - A List of Codes will be displayed, use Sort to List the Cases by Relevance
G - Click on the Statute link, ex: Wis. Stat. § 103.79
H - The Statute will be displayed

Search Law Reviews and View Documents

Step 1 - Start at the Library Home Page (http://www.uwstout.edu/lib/).

Step 2 - Select Indexes and Databases.

Step 3 - Select Lexis Nexis under Major Vendors.

A - Click on Legal tab
B - Select Legal Reviews (right column)
C - Select Sources, ex: U.S. & Canadian Law Reviews, combined (Note: Click on the Down Arrow to select a type of law such as Banking, Family or Labor, etc.)
D - Type in Keywords in the Terms and Connectors Search Box, ex: "golf courses" and negligence (Note: Quotes are used to search for phrases)
E - Click on the Search button
F - A List of Legal Review article citations will be displayed, use Sort to List the Cases by Relevance
G
- Click on the Law Review article link
H - The article will be displayed

Marking Multiple Documents to Retain

Print, E-mail, or Save (Download) Documents or Articles

Internet Explorer (IE) is the Internet browser used on the library's computers. The following procedures should be used for printing, e-mailing, and saving, or problems will subsequently occur. Use the Print, E-mail, or Save (Download) icons located in the upper right above the document instead of the browser toolbar.

Lexis Nexis Help

Lexis Nexis has provided extensive help screens and tutorials. To access help screens at any time during the search process follow these steps:

Step 1 - Start at the Library Home Page (http://www.uwstout.edu/lib/).

Step 2 - Select Indexes and Databases.

Step 3 - Select Lexis Nexis under Major Vendors.

Step 4 - Click on the Legal tab.

Step 5 - Select from the Legal Searches column (right), ex: Federal & State Cases.

Step 6 - Click on the ? (question mark), right side of the gray band at top with a label from the Legal Searches list, ex: Federal & State Cases.

Step 7 - The pop up help screens then explain how to do a search for that type of legal material; case law, legal reviews, codes, etc.

Remote Access to the Databases via an Internet Service Provider

Stout Users OnlyThis symbol indicates restricted library resources for use by UW-Stout students, faculty and staff.

When accessing library resources using an Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as America Online, Airstream or a local provider, a username and password prompt will appear.

A Stout e-mail username and password is required. Distance Education students and students taking short term/weekend classes may not have activated e-mail accounts. If a Stout e-mail account is not activated, follow the Remote Access Instructions or contact Ask5000 help desk (telephone) 715-232-5000 or ask5000@uwstout.edu.
