[hidetoc]Lexis Nexis: Academic is a comprehensive full text database covering national and international news, business, biographical and legal sources. These instructions will cover business resources including:
- Company Profiles (Public, Private, International)
- Company Dossiers (customizable)
- U.S. Security and Exchange Commission Filings (SEC)
- Country Profiles
To Start a Search
Step 1 - Start at the Library Home Page (http://www.uwstout.edu/lib/).
Step 2 - Select Indexes and Databases.
Step 3 - Select Lexis Nexis under Major Vendors.
Search and View Company Profiles
A - Click on Business tab
B - Select Company Profiles (left column)
C - Sources, click on the Down Arrow, then click on the check box to specific company resources such as Hoover's Company Profiles, Investext, Disclosure, etc. (Note: Click on the "i" icon to learn more about the resource)
D - Type in a Company Name in the search box , ex: Marcus Corporation
E - Click the Search button
F - A list of Company Reports will be displayed
G - Click on a Company Report link
H - The Company Report will be displayed or a link to the report in PDF Format
Note: Other searches available for Company Profiles (search elements can be combined to search more precisely, ex: Company Name and Natural Language) are:
- Company Ticker Symbol, ex: MCS
- Search Terms (Terms and Connectors or Natural Language, ex: hotels and entertainment)
- Date (select date ranges from the drop down menu)
Search and View Company Dossiers
This searching method provides basic and in-depth information on over 20 million global companies and over 1000 industries. Lists of similar companies can be created as well as comparing up to five companies with financial tables, balance sheets and income statements, etc.
A - Click on Business tab
B - Select Company Dossiers (left column)
C - Type in a Company Name in the search box, ex: Marcus Corporation
D - Click the Search button
E - A List of Companies will be displayed
F - Click on a Company link
G - The Company Dossier Snapshot Report will be displayed with a Table of Contents on the left
H - Click on any of the Table of Contents links, ex: Custom Report for the full report from the sources listed (Note: A customizable report can be generated by clicking on the last item in the Table of Contents)Note: Other searches available for Company Dossiers (search elements can be combined to search more precisely, ex: Company Name and Company Type) are:
- Company Ticker Symbol, ex: MCS
- D-U-N-S (Data Universal Numbering System)
- Company Type, ex: Public
- City (click on the Drop Down Arrow)
- State/Province (click on the Drop Down Arrow)
- Country (click on the Drop Down Arrow)
Search and View SEC Filings
The U.S. Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) Filings provide full text reports available in the SEC Edgar Database from 1993. These reports are provided by public companies as required by law.
A - Click on Business tab
B - Select SEC Filings (left column)
C - Sources, click on the Down Arrow to select other types of SEC reports, ex: SEC Filings, full text (Note: Click on the "i" icon to learn more about the resource)
D - Type in a Company Name, ex: Wal-Mart
E - Click on the Search button
F - A List of SEC Reports will be displayed
G - Click on a SEC Report link
H - The SEC Report will be displayed
Note: Other searches available for SEC Filings (search elements can be combined to search more precisely, ex: Company Name and Date) are:
- Company Ticker Symbol, ex: WMT
- Search Terms (Terms and Connectors or Natural Language, ex: retail and department stores)

Search and View Country Profiles
This type of search provides information on specific country news and reports.
A - Click on Business tab
B - Select Country Profiles (left column)
C - Country, click on the Down Arrow to select a country, ex: Australia
D - Click on the Search button
E - A List of articles related to the country searched will be displayed
F - Click on an Article link
G - The Article will be displayed
Note: Other searches available for Country Profiles (search elements can be combined to search more precisely, ex: Country and Source Type) are:
- Source Type, ex: Risk Reports (click on the Drop Down Arrow)
- Sources, click on the Drop Down Arrow, ex: Global Insight (Note: Click on the "i" icon to learn more about the resource)
- Additional Terms (Terms and Connectors or Natural Language, ex: Tourism and Eonomy)
- Date (select date ranges from the drop down menu)
Marking Multiple Documents to Retain
- After displaying the document list, click in the check box at the left to mark the document.
- Click on one of the icons in the upper right (print, e-mail, save (download).
- A window will appear, fill out the form to complete the process.
Print, E-mail, or Save (Download) Documents or Articles
Internet Explorer (IE) is the Internet browser used on the library's computers. The following procedures should be used for printing, e-mailing, and saving, or problems will subsequently occur. Use the Print, E-mail, or Save (Download) icons located in the upper right above the document instead of the browser toolbar.
Print:
- Display the record(s)
- Click on the Print icon located above the record to the right.
- The Print Option menu will appear
- Click on the Print button (defaults may be changed if needed)
E-mail:
- Display the record(s)
- Click on the E-mail icon located above the record to the right
- Select Options
- Send as: Attachment
- E-mail Format: HTML
- Type in your full e-mail address, ex: smithp@uwstout.edu
- Select or retain defaults
- Document View
- Page Options
- Document Range
- Font Options
- Click on Send button
Save (Download):
- Insert a formatted, 3 1/2" Floppy Disk in the A drive, Jump/Flash Drive (USB port), formatted CD-R disc, or save to the campus server (BlueDrive)
- Display the record(s)
- Click on the Save (Download) icon located above the record to the right
- Select or retain defaults
- Format: HTML
- Document View
- Page Options
- Font Options
- Click on the Download button
- A window will appear, click on the link
- Click on Save
- Select a drive, 3 1/2" Floppy Disc, Jump/Flash Drive, CD-R or BlueDrive
- Type in a file name, ex: golf
- Under "Save as type," select HTML
- Click on Save
Lexis Nexis Help
Lexis Nexis has provided extensive help screens and tutorials. To access help screens at any time during the search process follow these steps:
Step 1 - Start at the Library Home Page (http://www.uwstout.edu/lib/).
Step 2 - Select Indexes and Databases.
Step 3 - Select Lexis Nexis under Major Vendors.
Step 4 - Click on the Business tab.
Step 5 - Select from the Business Searches column (left), ex: Company Profiles.
Step 6 - Click on the Help link, located on the right side of the gray band at top with a label from the Business Searches list, ex: Company Profiles.
Step 7 - The pop up help screens then explain how to do a search for that type of business material; company profiles, company dossiers, SEC filings, etc.
Remote Access to the Databases via an Internet Service Provider
This
symbol indicates restricted library resources for use by UW-Stout students,
faculty and staff.
When accessing library resources using an Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as America Online, Airstream or a local provider, a username and password prompt will appear.
A Stout e-mail username and password is required. Distance Education students and students taking short term/weekend classes may not have activated e-mail accounts. If a Stout e-mail account is not activated, follow the Remote Access Instructions or contact Ask5000 help desk (telephone) 715-232-5000 or ask5000@uwstout.edu.
