Finding Information Sources

World Wide Web Resources

Search engines are automated key word searching robots that look at the full text of web pages to search for the words entered. Results are usually in relevance order, with some of the best choices first.

Subject directories, like Yahoo, have browsable subject categories. Keyword searching looks for words in the named subject categories, titles or abstracts of Web sites. The results list is smaller than when using search engines.

No search engine or subject directory is comprehensive! There is overlap, but each covers unique sites. Try several engines or directories. On Searching the Web, read the description of each engine's protocols for the most efficient searching methods.

In addition to Searching the Web, look at Stout library's Subject and Reference Guides for subject related web resources.
