APA requires the use of hanging indentations and double spacing for citations in a word processor; however, check with your instructor, as some instructors request single spacing!

Hanging Indentations
In Microsoft Word 2007, follow these instructions to use hanging indents properly (perform this action before or after creating your citations):
- Click on the Page Layout tab
- Click on the menu expander arrow on the Paragraph bar (in red below)
- Click on the Indents and Spacing tab (default).
- Under the Indentation section look for the Special field.
- In the dropdown box click on Hanging.
- Adjust the amount in the By field (0.5" is default).
Generic APA Format Examples
Generic Journal
Author's Last Name, First Initial. (Publication year). Article title. Journal Title, Volume (Issue Number if journal is paginated per issue), Pages. Retrieved month day, year, from Database Name.
Generic Magazine
Author's Last Name, First Initial. (Publication year, month day). Article title. Magazine Title, Volume and/or Issue Number, Pages. Retrieved month day, year, from Database Name.
Generic Newspaper
Author's Last Name, First Initial. (Publication year, month day). Article title. Newspaper title (edition, if available), section and page. Retrieved month day, year, from Database Name.
Note: If no authors listed, Article title goes in author position.
