Fall 2014 Learning Communities

What are learning communities?

Learning communities intentionally link courses, and/or a course(s) and residential living component, around a theme or problem, and enroll a small common cohort of first year students for the purpose of building community, enhancing learning in and out of the classroom, and fostering connections among students, faculty, and disciplines.

Students that participate in a learning community, on average, will

  • Be retained at a higher rate
  • Have higher GPAs
  • Have higher graduation rates
  • Be actively engaged on campus
  • Spend more time on their academics
  • Be more satisfied with their academic experience
  • Demonstrate grow in the key cognitive strategies
