Certification of Financial Support
U.S. immigration regulations require that every international student studying in the U.S. has adequate financial resources to cover all expenses while studying in the U.S.. For this reason, all international students must comply with these regulations by certifying and/or providing documented evidence of adequate funds to meet all of the expenses that they will incur during their first year of study, and show that either family or sponsors are willing and able to send the necessary additional funds for the rest of the students' stay. Normally, applicants will not be offered admission until certification is provided for at least a full 12 months of financial support.
Students considering bringing their spouses and/or children should think carefully when planning to study in the U.S. The U.S. Immigration Service does not permit spouses (F-2 Dependent Visa) to work under any conditions. Moreover, the statement of financial support will have to document additional funds to cover expenses including comprehensive health insurance for all dependents.
Financial Assistance
Scholarships: The Stout University Foundation sponsors scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students. Scholarships are awarded on a variety of criteria. The Scholarship Committee will make selection in the spring for the following academic year.
Tuition Reduction: International Student Tuition Reductions are available. Students must apply and meet a variety of criteria to be eligibile.
Student Employment: U.S. immigration laws restrict employment opportunities for international students. Working on-campus is possible within limits. Off-campus employment is not allowed for first-year students but may be possible during subsequent years within U.S. immigration laws.
Graduate Assistantships: Graduate Assistantships may be available through the Graduate School at 130 Bowman Hall. Please contact the graduate office for application materials, or you may obtain them online.

The spring semester begins in mid-January and ends in mid-May. A two-week summer interim begins in mid-May followed by an eight-week summer session that begins in June. Our staff includes a physician, nurse practitioner, registered nurses, medical technologist, health educator and office staff. All currently registered students are eligible for services.
Health Insurance
The University of Wisconsin System requires all international students attending one of the state institutions to have comprehensive hospital and medical insurance which should include medical evacuation and repatriation. UW-Stout has contracted with an insurance company for health insurance for international students, and you will be automatically billed for this with your tuition and fees.
Housing and Food Services
Housing is available on campus for single students only. Housing is available near campus for couples and other students that wish to live off campus. All freshmen are required to live on campus for their first year. Food services are included with the housing contract information.
Visa Information
The I-20 form (or the DS-2019 form) will be sent to students once their admission has been confirmed and fully approved. Students receiving I-20 forms will be granted an F-1 (students) Visa by the U.S. consular officer in their country upon presenting a valid passport and certification that they are able to financially support themselves while in the U.S. On the other hand, students receiving an DS-2019 form will be granted a J-1 (Exchange Visitor's) Visa.
It must be emphasized that during their entire stay in the U.S., students will be held to the conditions of admission and all criteria stated in the I-20 or DS-2019 forms.
Students can attend only the college or university that issues these forms. Using these forms to attend another institution is considered a federal offense.
Any questions regarding visa applications should be addressed to the U.S. consulate in the student's country.
